The ninth release of katharsis is the EP “Journey Before Destination” by jjjacob, which is the first full release of the label founder on his own label. The EP spans six tracks and is quite a deviation in sound from his earlier releases on labels such as ANBA, high heal and Sweat Taste. Taking a step away from his usual tools of heavily automated synths and complex midi-based melodies, this EP focuses closely on recordings of acoustic instruments and vocals done by jjjacob himself throughout the pandemic year.

With titles and themes of “Journey Before Destination” drawing severely on The Stormlight Archive novel-series by Brandon Sanderson, the listener is taken on a dreamy trip through medieval landscapes and emotional worldbuilding. The sounds of heroic struggles, poignant pilgrimages and mystical creatures are carried through on the six tracks of the album by its melancholic piano phrases, processed guitar stretches and manipulated vocals. However, even though the acoustic instruments seem to be a change of expression for jjjacob, the recognizable layer of weird samples, field recordings and sound effects that usually pervade his music still flow through the whole EP.

The 16th release of katharsis is the EP “Internal Presence” by the label founder, jjjacob. This EP is the follow-up and counterpart to his earlier release on the label “Journey Before Destination” which came out half a year before on March 8th. On this release, jjjacob returns to his usual uncompromising electronic sound after exploring more minimalistic and acoustic facets of his musical expression on the preceding EP. By blending uncanny choirs and obscure samples with peculiar synths and IDM-inspired drums, jjjacob’s melodic universe brings the listener on a sonic adventure into a fantasy-infused world.

While “Journey Before Destination” sought to explore the heroic struggles of a poignant pilgrimager, “Internal Presence” examines the magical sensations and daunting emotions of otherworldly transformations. Starting from the grandiose trance-infused intro anthem “Shapeshifter”, the EP quickly develops into the curious yet introverted exploration of an exquisite domain on “Realm of Essence”. Following this, immense feelings and existential contemplations are presented through ethereal harps and hymns of lost spirits on “Lethal Sentiment”, before angelic creatures serenade about the destination of our eternal journey on the closing track “Terminal Bliss”.

The 23rd release of katharsis is the collaborative album “Brutal Nature” by label founder jjjacob and various other artists. The idea of the project, which has been in progress for several years, was to extend the artistry to a more conversational form than the classic introverted style of the electronic music composer. The album shaped itself through several exchanges of ideas and stems between jjjacob and the numerous artists of the project.

The final product of the collaborations has a common theme of finding solace in the darkness and brutality of nature. This could be exemplified by the deep melancholy infused with an inner peace of losing a loved one in the mourning song “Threnody” with Hajj, or in the overcoming and healing of both internal and external wounds by the catharsis of music and art on the eloquent track “Trauma” with Bungalovv and Odete. As an introduction to the album, jjjacob and the local Beham created an auditory interpretation of self-blame with movie samples and abrasive low-end explosions, and to conclude it jjjacob and Slikback created the bass-heavy club lullaby “Bonum Nocte”.

The album follows jjjacob's previous two EPs on katharsis from last year, “Journey Before Destination” and “Internal Presence”, but it is his first full-length album since “Body Without Organs” released on the Spanish label Sweat Taste in 2020. The album artwork is a collaboration between jjjacob and Emil Stephensen, with the main motive being a painting by the latter.

Brutal Nature

FLORAS is the new album from katharsis founder jjjacob, releasing on May 21st to mark the five-year anniversary of the label’s first output. A celebration shaped by time, patience, and transformation, FLORAS is an assemblage of seven tracks - each with its history. The oldest dates back to 2018; the newest bloomed only months ago. Initially intended for other projects or collaborations that never fully took root, these compositions have been reworked, reimagined, and refined - transformed by years of quiet attention. Stylistically, the release moves between the physical and the introspective - crushed drumbreaks, poignant basslines, grand synth melodies, and obscure granular vocals.

Each track is like an ancient, fluorescent flower rediscovered in a distant cave, alien in form yet deeply familiar. Cyclical in structure, they mirror the seasonal processes: emerging, flourishing, decaying, returning. There’s a strange botanical logic at play, as patterns and shapes reappear like genetic echoes, and even discarded stems sprout new life. Melodic ideas and textural procedures reverberate across tracks like shared ancestral material, connecting them like a hidden underground network. Some tracks still bear traces of feedback or collaboration that never fully materialized - ghost limbs and branches that helped shape the whole.

Built from ambient textures, hard-hitting percussion, and sonic details that reward deep listening, FLORAS is a meditation on growth, time, and potential. The release reflects not only a shift in jjjacob’s personal process, but also a new chapter for katharsis itself: after five years of near-monthly releases, the label now turns toward a slower rhythm - giving each release more space to breathe, settle, and take root before moving on.

Your soul wants to show itself in its truest form, strength, perseverance, courage and determination of spirit. In this lifetime your soul needs to cleanse and open its feelings for katharsis.

With the double compilation “Infinite Summer: Ekstase & Fantasi”, katharsis celebrates the return of raves and concerts to society after a long period of pandemic shutdown. A magical summer has past filled with a great pallet of emotional material, ready to be expressed. Therefore, we encouraged a collection of artists we adore to channel their imagination of the greatest way to conclude an endless summer night with into a piece of music.

This resulted in a grand assemblage of harmonious manifestations, naturally splitting into two divisions with opposing focuses. In contrast to the first part of the duology “Ekstase”, which focused on euphoric and dancefloor-oriented outputs, this second part “Fantasi” has a more serene and introverted focal point. The majority of the tracks seem to be meant to stop time in deep reflection with a placid sunrise as the backdrop, exemplified by the purgative opener “salomé” by Aestum, but the listener will find occasional rhythmic outpourings like the unhurried clubby vibes on awbluu’s “Rosalyne (Voxen)” or the beautiful melodic “we will get where?” by Beham.

The time has come to take a step back and review our label from a meta-analytical perspective; roughly three years have passed yielding dozens of free digital music releases, two physical artifacts to acquire (a magnificent cassette-tape & a spectacular t-shirt), and even more emotional and artistic connections between the creators and enjoyers of katharsis.

As a celebration of our release number 30, we indulged in our homemade tradition of creating a sample-pack from our discography, as we did on “Emotional Core Sequencing” in 2021. The method of this tradition is simply to scan thoroughly through our newer releases to chop and collect small snippets of sounds, compiling and intuitively categorizing a sample-pack of ready-to-use .wav-files for your DAW of preference.

This simultaneously reflects the aim and philosophy of katharsis, to enable and accommodate all people in their potential for making art and to break down the boundaries of creativity resulting from our copyright-infringed society. Go ahead and use the samples in your productions, we are already excited to hear what will come from it. As a demonstration of the contents of the sample pack and its creative abilities, label founder jjjacob has put together a track only using sound material from the sample pack.

All tracks emerged as infantile jjjacob sketches, then taking more form and gaining inspirational matter from the collaborating artists' conduct and care, before finally being concluded by the final touches of jjjacob again.

The result is as the title suggests smooth and gentle at most times, but it does though have more wicked and harsh moments and aspects throughout the album. The emotional journey of the album keeps pendulating between the pleasant floating sensations of celestial emptiness and the brute mysticality of the unknown. At times it feels aerodynamic or dissolving, at others it tastes crispy and anthemic, but the overall output is definitely ethereal and cosmic.

Vulnerability is the guardian of integrity. If we are brave enough often enough, we will fall; this is the physics of vulnerability. With each passage of human growth we must shed a protective structure. We are left exposed and vulnerable - but also yeasty and embryonic again, capable of stretching in ways we hadn't known before. It is time to let go of your fear and doubts. You must learn to embrace the darkness of your soul, for it is a light beacon of hope for humanity. Your soul wants to show itself in its truest form, strength, perseverance, courage and determination of spirit. In this lifetime your soul needs to cleanse and open its feelings for katharsis. This current physical lifetime offers you a new leaf, to be able to learn to balance obsolete, distorted behaviors.

katharsis with jjjacob & hajj on Threads*Nordvest (17/12/20)

The ninth release of katharsis is the EP “Journey Before Destination” by @jjjacob, which is the first full release of the label founder on his own label. The EP spans six tracks and is quite a deviation in sound from his earlier releases on labels such as ANBA, high heal and Sweat Taste. Taking a step away from his usual tools of heavily automated synths and complex midi-based melodies, this EP focuses closely on recordings of acoustic instruments and vocals done by jjjacob himself throughout the pandemic year.

With titles and themes of “Journey Before Destination” drawing severely on The Stormlight Archive novel-series by Brandon Sanderson, the listener is taken on a dreamy trip through medieval landscapes and emotional worldbuilding. The sounds of heroic struggles, poignant pilgrimages and mystical creatures are carried through on the six tracks of the album by its melancholic piano phrases, processed guitar stretches and manipulated vocals. However, even though the acoustic instruments seem to be a change of expression for jjjacob, the recognizable layer of weird samples, field recordings and sound effects that usually pervade his music still flow through the whole EP.
