Moving In The Right Direction Guest Mix - Joe Lyons-Rising [Feb 2024]

We are thrilled to have Sleepy Freeman as our guest on Hip-House Radio!

There’s not much to Sleepy. He loves life, music and those that get it. After 35 years of weaving through the evolution of the Toronto club scene and interacting with peers he highly respects, the DJ bug has finally hit him after sitting in the shadows for decades just appreciating the experience by spending every moment on the dancefloor. In 2016, he started up WDFA Radio with Dan Szabo, which at the time was a monthly live stream, showcasing the talent Toronto has to offer, from those that deserve shine, but don’t get the opportunity as well as those who are accomplished, experienced and world class. 

Now there is a show once a week with different DJs hosting on WDFA Radio with Sleepy hosting his own show called “The Sleepy Experiment”. Sleepy has since become a requested talent, playing around the city alongside names like Nick Holder, Tyrone Solomon, Demuir, Jason Hodges, Jovonn, DJ Mes, Gene King, and LeBaron James at various venues in the city.

His style is based on his own journey through the underground house music scene as well as his love for music as a whole, from Afro to Deep to Jackin to Soulful to Disco to Tech that’ll snap your neck.

2023 was a standout year for Madame Electrifie, with a 14 date festival tour, her first play by Jamz Supernova on BBC Radio 6 Music, and a residency with the Stanton Sessions club series.  Rolling in to 2024 and she's ready to level up again, with a host of new music ready to drop and bookings both in the UK and internationally lined up across the next few months.
'Fine' is the first of the new material to drop, and sees her plunging into a deeper and more techy sound. The driving bassline carries the groove with layered percussion and sharp snares cutting through to give dancefloor energy. The vocal builds and loops till it becomes insistent in the breakdown, before the drop brings us firmly back to the floor. Everything's Just Fine.

Long Bio:
For over 2 decades Joe Lyons-Rising has shared his positive vibrations with dance floors and ear holes in Canada and around the world. As a mental health advocate and Executive Grief Ambassador, Joe is a strong believer in the healing therapy of music and dance as powerful releases for trauma, grief, depression and anxiety.

Joe's unique brand of Hip-House is a blend of Jackin/Tech/Deep House, Golden Era Hip-Hop and Bassline Vibes from the 90s warehouse days to today.

He has played at clubs and festivals alongside such DJs and artists as Robb G,  Deadmau5, DJ Dan, John Acquaviva, Gorge, Sonny Fodera, Hatiras,  Mark Oliver, Jonathan Rosa, Deko-ze, Evan G, Hooker, The Junkies, Nathan Barato, Addy, Mike Gleeson, Rich Hope, JELO, Manzone & Strong, JoJo Flores, Wynter Gordon, Chiclet, Justin Tyce, John E as well as performing at the 2011 BPM Festival in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
