I've done every "ice" Junto project, so I have a lot of samples and processed samples to work with.  

This year, I loaded a bunch of old files in the iOS app Samplr and smoothed them out with in-app processing that was sent to my sonic Zambonis, an Empress Echoplex chained to an Empress Reverb.

Sonic Groom (disquiet0523)

Every year, the "Disquiet Junto"  poses the same project, ever since the very first Junto project, back in January 2012: "Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it"

Here, I've recorded 3 icecubes tumbling down in a drinking glass - and then spent a couple of hours mangling, stretching, reverbing, reversing, delaying, eq'ing, deleting, restarting, re-recording, giving-up'ing, and then still posting...

...it's a great, but difficult, challenge to make something. This is, as is probably the easiest, an "ethereal" version of my experiments.

My second time doing the ice cubes junto.
Never been happy with the first one, hope this one grows on me.
I used:
-the previous junto0262 plastic ice cubes recording
-some new real ice cubes on wine glasses with pitch shifted delay
-crystal bowls hit with soft mallets (from Soniccouture’s Glassworks
-an Albion Steamband brass pad
-original wav samples by Chris Watson from a bank called “Water & Ice”, samples evocatively called “Under The Ice, “Glass Low” and Ice Shards”

Created at home on the rainy cold morning of Friday January 7th 2022.

I made an attempt to make some music for disquiet0523 according to this rule: Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it. I made up all of the beats and most of the tonal stuff from recording Ice in a cocktail glass+ Wine glass. I used Ciemno from Felt to add some more stable tonality to the tune. Being that I live in Wintercold Norway, I also cheated by recording my footsteps in snow, -8C degrees, looking for some suitable ice to use. The Bassdrum is from setting the glass back on a wood table. So I guess that's cheating a bit too. Sounds like 90´s IDM, BUT it was great fun...

Just ice - disquiet0523

Ice cube in a wine glass sampled for Disquiet Junto 0523. Played around with the sample on the Circuit Rhythm, then into Ableton for layering those recordings and arranging. Duplicated a couple of the tracks and added some spectral resonance, very low in mix. Played some drums because the cube samples had some sweet rhythms and I couldn't get Beastie Boys "Ill Communication" out of my head.

Got That Chill Communication [disquiet0523]

"Boxes" is my tenth yearly Disquiet Junto recording of ice in a glass and making something of it.

This year, I used some ice from my driveway in a small glass.  The rattling was recorded by my old Zoom H2, run through my new Empress Echosystem on some setting, and then sent over to my Empress Reverb for further processing, and out to my Tascam DR-05.

I was rattling it in one hand and "live tweaking" settings with the other.  I don't know what selections I was using on either box for this recording.  I made quite a few short variations, but I liked this one the most as it starts out super muted and ends with a recognizable sound.

The Empress boxes are outstanding.  I've had the Reverb for a little over two years and can't imagine making sounds without it.  I'll never sell it.  I got the Echosystem recently, and the two together are something else.

Orange Man Circles The Drain (disquiet0471)

This is made from snippets of a one minute sample of ice in a glass. Though some effects are applied all sounds are included as sampled (with minor EQ in mix) and represent the original material fairly faithfully. The result is purely rhythmic and textural rather than containing any melody or harmony.

Darling (disquiet0471)

Another January evening, another recording of ice rattling in glasses [i made Al a Gin & Tonic this year, v. pro social].

From the second year on, i've been trying to make these in some sort of conversation with each other, even as i try to make a point of heightening their differences; last year's was an extended, highly processed drone so this this years should be cleaner, more percussive...

with that in mind, i chopped small sections out of the recording of the ice cubes [& bevarage] and set them to rattle away in a more or less randomised pattern at 108bpm. I tried to chip away at it, make sure ithad some sort of swing but it wasn't obviously repetative, you know? Once i had a framework i liked, I processed it further in audiomulch - making a couple grittier/degraded versions and putting it through a ludicrous disteneded granualtion thing i've been working with for something else.

With four versions rendered i then set about chopping them about, making them kind of fit together as an inconsistently consistent ~beat. & here we are.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
