The multimedia guide to New Harmony: Abstraction between the Wars, 1919–1939 explores artworks from the Guggenheim’s 20th-century collection. Paul Klee, who played the violin every day, explored the relationship between music and color in numerous artworks featuring color grids as musical notation.

Art historian Jürgen Glaesemer discusses Paul Klee and German Romanticism in the seventh annual Hilla Rebay Lecture, which took place on November 18, 1986. Glaesemer wrote extensively on Klee’s life and work, in addition to curating numerous related exhibitions. Curator Vivian Barnett of the Guggenheim introduces the lecture.

"Rose Garden" (Rosengarten, 1920)
Twenty-seven roses are sprinkled aesthetically throughout a city of pink, orange, and white buildings, criss-crossed by streets and pathways. This use of a recurring symbolic motive keeps the eye moving throughout the community, and observe its structures from various perspectives while exploring the garden.
