Nicolas Jaar - Variations

 They put it quite nicely in that song from Tocotronic: "The youth have built it themselves." Tim Vitá & Oliver Gehrmann have been fans of Freude-am-Tanzen for a while now. Currently these inexhaustible and nuts-and-bolts record-spinning dudes - post their digital label debut "136 Tales" - have a vinyl edition on the way. Oliver & Tim are known as solo-artists in the world of warm beats. Tocotronic once more: "We had a few words with them. From there we determined that we like it around here." A full-throated studio session all together brought about the maxim: Let there be house! And "24 Pieces" was in the bag. They seem to posses an affinity for numbers in their titles. Fortunately they paint their sounds not only after such elementary means, but rather with sensual artistry and authentic musicality. From this EP bubbles forth modern house with a melodic sensibility, honoring the past, a hymnic-character, an easiness with the vocals, experimental and the midnight train to the dance floor. Vitá & Gehrmann, a duo which the label name completely personifies. Thank heavens the two have each other... 

Wie heißt es so schön in einem Lied von Tocotronic: „Das haben sich die Jugendlichen selbst aufgebaut“. Tim Vitá & Oliver Gehrmann waren erst Fans von Freude am Tanzen. Nun reihen sich die unermüdlich gemeinsam auflegenden und schraubenden Burschen, nach ihrem digitalen Label-Debüt „136 Tales“ in den Vinyl-Katalog ein. Oliver & Tim sind behände als Solokünstler in der Welt der warmen Beats unterwegs. Wieder treffend Tocotronic: „Wir haben uns unterhalten. Und festgestellt, dass es uns hier gefällt.“ Zur gemeinsamen Studiosession tönte es lauthals aus ihnen: Let there be House!
Und „24 Pieces“ war in den Kästen. Sie scheinen ein Faible für Zahlen in Titeln zu haben. Zum Glück malen sie ihre Sounds nicht nur nach solchen, denn sinnliche Kraft und echte Musikalität sind Trumpf. Aus dieser EP sprudelt moderner House mit Melodie-Sensibilität, Vergangenheits-Verbeugung, Hymnen-Charakter, locker-ungenierten Stimmeneinsatz, Experimentierfreudigkeit und Zug zur Tanzfläche. Vitá & Gehrmann, ein Duo, welches den Labelname komplett in seine Blutbahnen verinnerlicht hat. Gott sei Dank, haben sie beide sich gehabt...

There are also new artists that have been invited to release on Drumcode for this compilation and others who are a staple in Drumcode’s core family. Adam Beyer’s new EP titled ‘Teach Me’ is an accomplished piece of work that highlights Beyer's year thus far. 'Teach Me' starts with some eerie chords before the distinctive vocal kick in and the track drops into a rumbling techno track. ‘Darlek’ uses rhythmic beeps and huge synth stab to create a funky rhythm before the atmospheric pads create a beautiful setting for this incredible techno track. ‘Stop Talking’ is a deeper offering from Beyer using weird and unusual noises to create and interesting piece of work that is helped along by the throbbing bass underlying in the track. ‘Spaceman’ uses a rhythmic vocal, percussion and sub bass to turn this track into a funky techno piece.

The EP starts with Mikael Jonasson’s, ‘Benefit of the Doubt’ which uses dark, melodic bleeps to create tension before the epic chord stabs kick in that resonate over the throbbing bass line. Adam Beyer steps up with the second track ‘Never Really Left Home’ that uses a rhythmic synth-line to create a dark and moody piece of music. Ida Engberg then delivers her unique style of techno using old rave sounds and a huge hoover style synth to create a driving techno track that will keep any dancefloor moving. The Manic Brother’s supply another big track named ‘Different Directions’ using reverberated stabs to create an atmospheric, but still functional track with lots of rhythmic percussion thrown in. Patrick Siech then steps up with the next track, ‘Kill Room’ that also uses atmospheric percussion and stabs to build into a funky drum groove. Joel Mull presents the sixth track on the compilation; ‘Rimson’ that uses hypnotic drums to captures the listener’s attention to lead into a floaty synth and vocal line before the track introduces a pulsating bass line. ‘Second Coming’ is the next offering with Petter B using recurrent percussion to full effect to create a purposeful, heavy hitting techno track. The final track by Cari Lekebusch called ‘Xylopeggiator’, conveys a dark, pounding 5 AM rhythm that uses vocal samples and a melodic synth to create a hypnotic drum pattern.

Adam Beyers unique vision of The Afterparty uses phased percussion, tripped out drums and an ethereal like pad and melody to create a stand out remix that blends together two unique ideas momentously. Ben Klock steps up to take on The Afterparty too with the sound ever so synonymous with him. He uses rhythmic stabs and an unusual melody that works so well within the atmospheric landscape he has created. Joseph Capriatis remix of Can you feel it is a funky techno track that uses stabs to really build a solid groove that will be a sure fire hit. The Sandwell District remix of I Feel it Deep uses the original vocal in an ambient journey with pads and percussion to tell a story. Alan Fitzpatrick yet again doesnt disappoint with his remix of Riots in London that uses delayed stabs and a rolling bass line to construct another dark peak time player. Jerome Sydenhams Carbon Dub of Smoke and Mirrors is heavily dynamic and uses a piano chord and the original vocal to create an energetic vibe. Cari Lekebusch remix of Bullet uses a phased underlying melody to really drive the track forward before the bleep melody is introduced later into the track. Jeromes Looking Glass Dub also of Smoke and Mirrors uses a throbbing bass line to power through the early hours of the morning with the use of the delayed vocal and rhythmic hi hats creating a funky techno groove.
