Myrys stands for mysticism and rys. Mysticism in this composition means mysterious and inexplicable. Rys means thin twig. The island of Galibi, the subject of this composition, is as it were that thin twig. It can be broken so easily if the native population does not protect it.

FORCES OF THE SEA - Leon Vliex.

Written on behalf of wind band ’Nut & Uitspanning (Zonnemaire)’ in The Netherlands on the occasion of the 65th commemoration of the 1953 Flood Disaster. Unmistakable in this work is the power of the sea that caused the disaster, but also the power of solidarity in commemorating the victims, the resilience of people to continue living and finally the attraction that the sea has for tourists, water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. ’Forces of the Sea’ is a musical monument for all victims, but also radiates hope for the future.

Forces Of The Sea - Leon Vliex

The ’gathering of the armies’ is the third scene from act three of Richard Wagner's ’Lohengrin’. Due to the turbulent political situation, the German King Heinrich had come to Antwerp to recruit Brabant forces. These Brabant troops are then gathered  along the river. After a signal-like opening, this part of the opera builds up to a true climax.

Gathering of the Armies-Richard Wagner / arr. Sandor Hendriks

ELIAS CHORAL - Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy / arr. Jo Vliex.

Mendelssohn started work on his oratorio ’Elias’ around Januari 1845. At the same time, however, he was working on a symphony, a piano trio, six organ sonatas and incidental music. As a result, his oratorio was not completed until August 1846. This chorale is one of the examples of romanticism in this otherwise relatively unknown oratorio.

LA NOCHE NUEVA - Tim Verstegen

The ruins of Tintagel Castle are among the most romantic in Europe. They are situated on a rocky promontory on the north coast of Cornwall. According to the English writer ’Geoffrey of Monmouth’, this is the place where King Arthur has lived. He wrote this in the year 1130. The Arthurian legend dates back to the 5th century. The current castle did not yet exist at that time. It was built in the year 1141 by ’Reginald, Earl of Cornwall’. There were other ruins on this promontory, but these were not visible in the 12th century. They were discovered in 1930 and indicated as remains of a Celtic society. However, pottery fragments found have been identified as important pieces from the Mediterranean area from the early 5th and 6th centuries. Since then it has been suggested that - given these valuable finds - a household with a great leader would be more appropriate than a monastic order. This great leader could be King Arthur. Tintagel Castle is not the musical version of the Arthurian legend, but more of an impression on the castle itself, King Arthur and his well known  magic sword. The parts that flow into each other are after the introduction: ’The King’, ’The Castle’, the ’Tintagel Choral’ and ’The Sword’.

TINTAGEL CASTLE - Leon Vliex.

The ’Kaddish’ is a Jewish prayer for the dead. It is recited by mourners morning and evening for a period of eleven months, and then annually on the anniversary of the death of the deceased. The composition was written as a memorial for James Clifton Williams, a beloved teacher of MacBeth. The "heartbeat" that runs through the work as a common thread is a quotation from Caccia and Chorale; a composition by Williams. This continuous heartbeat in the percussion shows us the victory of life over death. It proves that as long as a person is remembered, he never really dies.

KADDISH - Willam Francis MacBeth / arr. Geert Schrijvers.

A light, swinging three-part composition, of which the middle section, a sensitive andante titled ’Boating on a Sunday Afternoon’, provides an atmospheric resting point. But in the outer sections -  ’A Festive Day’ in lively 5/4 time full of syncopations and ’Winter Fun’ in alla breve with much dotted rhythm, things get fierce. In the short introduction to this work, ’the Winter’ leaves no doubt that we are in The Netherlands, given the short quotes from ’In Holland is a House’ and the national anthem ’Wilhelmus’.
