FIESTA EN EL PUEBLO - Leon Vliex.

Bedrich Smetana is the father of modern Czech music. Unfortunately, fate struck him in 1874. Shortly after the premiere of his opera ’The Two Widows’ he became deaf. This misfortune did not break his resolve. Between 1874 and 1879, he composed the impressive cycle My Fatherland (Má Vlast), six symphonic poems. Part 5 of the cycle is ’Tábor’, the Hussite Castle. The piece is a fantasy based on the battle chorus "Die ihr seid die Kämpfer Gottes" (Those are the fighting gods).

TABOR from ’MA VLAST’ - Bedrich Smetana / arr. Martin Koekelkoren.

The Knights Templar is a short overture. The work's title is inspired by the legend of the Freemasonry Templars, their symbols, and their spiritualism. This overture's symbolic structure is the A-B-A form. The A form always suggests a military theme, while the B form reflects a more spiritual and contemplative nature.

THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR - Nuno Leal.

The ’Marche du Sacre’ is number 3 in the ’Jeanne d’Arc suite’. Jeanne d’Arc premiered on November 8, 1873, at the Theatre de la Gaité in Paris, and this five-act drama was received with great success by the public.

MARCHE DU SACRE from JEANNE D’ARC - Charles Gounod / arr. Jo Vliex.

In his opera ’Prince Igor’, Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) describes the confrontation of medieval Russian rulers with advancing steppe peoples, known as Polovtsians. The overture from this opera has been adapted for Wind Band.

PRINCE IGOR: OVERTURE - Alexander Borodin / arr. Jo Vliex.

Gustave Michiels composed the opera ’Colombine’, numerous songs and works for chamber music, piano, and violin. He also composed several Hungarian folk dances for piano. ’Cigany Csardas’ is also originally a piano piece, now arranged for Wind Band and Fanfare Band.

Elgar’s best-known works are probably the ’Enigma Variations’ and the ’Pomp and Circumstance Marches Nos. 1-5’. The first march, containing Land of Hope and Glory, achieved the greatest fame, partly through its performance at the Last Night of the Proms. However, ’Pomp and Circumstance No. 5’ is also a gem!

Wilhelm Peterson-Berger composed ’Majkarneval in Stockholm’ - an intermezzo for orchestra - in 1892. The music is thoroughly romantic in nature. Swedish folkloristic themes are often found in his compositions.

MAJKARNEVAL i STOCKHOLM - Wilhelm Peterson-Berger / arr. Jo Vliex.

Niels W. Gade composed many symphonies and overtures. One of these overtures is the ’Nordische Sennfahrt’ composed in 1850. This work received its first performance on November 7, 1889 in Leipzig and is one of the so-called ’Lustspiel-Ouverturen’.

NORDISCHE SENNFAHRT - Niels Gade / arr. Jo Vliex.

In 1905 Stenhammar composed the cantata ’Ett Folk’ (The People) for baritone solo, mixed choir and symphony orchestra. From the third movement of this cantata comes ’Medborgarsang’, composed in a romantic style.
