MantraRay is two long-time friends, Trevor Brill and Billy Raymond-Barker. Trevor lives in Cardiff, South Wales and Billy lives in Brixham, Devon. Back in the 90’s, Trev and Billy worked together in London and were part of a five-piece band gigging around the London pub circuit, Billy on guitar and Trev on the drums. Then life got in the way, children were born and the band went their separate ways. Fast forward thirty years and the boys, well, two of them, are back! The magic of electronic file transfers has made their collaboration a reality despite the geographical separation. 

Their music covers a variety of genres but is mostly filed under Alt Rock. Musical  influences include the Manic Street Preachers, Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, Super Furry Animals, The Cure, Rush, Stone Temple Pilots…..the list could go on and on….way too many artists that they both love and enjoy, mainy from the “rock” genre but not exclusively, also enjoying Ska, Motown, Pop and Electronica. Their lyrics often reflect the emotional turmoil existing within personal relationships, grief, loss, love, sex as well as events such as 9/11 and the war in Ukraine. 

They released their first album, MantraRay – The Collection, in October 2021 and quickly found themselves many new fans who enjoyed the diverse range of songs, even being nominated for Tim Burgess’ Album of the Year 2021 by Ricky Spence. Their single releases have been similarly well received, Just Like the Sun being voted into the top 30 songs of 2022 in the Indie 100 Cup on In Your Ears Music and Sunflowers being selected as Duggystone Radio’s single of the month for January 2023. 

Their second album, Between The Lies, was released on 1st December 2023 and all profits from sales were donated to the mental health charity, Mind, Body and Sole. Reviews were glowing; "Stunning" "One of the best albums of the year" "Awesome - full of soul" "WOW - something else this album - I'm hooked" "My God - such a fantastic album"...a CD is available for purchase from their Bandcamp page (see linktree below).

Their new EP, The Joy of Six, featuring the latest single, Halo, is due for release in December 2024 and will only be available on Bandcamp,

Active on social media, they are big supporters of the new music scene and love to see people they know doing well. They have no interest in “monetising” their music but get their thrills from knowing that people are playing their music on the radio or listening to them on streaming sites.

After a lot of discussions around practicalities, the band have decided that they will not be playing live gigs and will simply concentrate on sharing the creation of new music online. They continue to live the message “Enjoy yourselves, it’s later than you think, but never too late!”

Just a dude who loves making music. Multi-instrumentalist inspired by the great songwriters of bygone days. Simple home recording setup of amp and iPad.

These days, everything is recorded through my Mackie Onyx 8 analogue mixer.  I prefer to create sounds on my analogue synths but you'll also hear sounds created with my Korg Wavestate and Roland S-1.  All percussion/drums are played by me on my Native Instruments Maschine Mikro Mk3, where I spend a lot of time manipulating samples to hopefully get something original sounding.
