Spring Cleaning Mixx 2022

This week we’re pleased to return to our series focused on DJs who are women in our community, with a new mix from Seattle based Black Velveteen. 

About Black Velveteen: 
Before she became Black Velveteen,
Chris Offutt was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Her parents introduced her to a wide range of music; Motown to Mozart and everything in between. Some frequently featured artists in young Chris’s house were Aretha Franklin, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder and James Taylor. Current influences include Chris Fortier, Steve Porter, Wild Culture,Juliet Sikora, Mathias Meyer, Inxec, Milty Evans, Stimming

From a very young age she dreamed of hosting her own radio show. In 2011 that dream came to fruition when she had her own show “ Progressions in House” on FNOOB based out of London.
She is a resident for Proton Radio and hosts her own show Integrated. 
Chris has enjoyed DJing around the San Francisco Bay Area over the past 5 years. In 2012 she became the resident DJ and musical director at Aloft Hotel SFO. In 2013 Djing in the Pride Parade on the W Hotel float. In 2015 she was asked to perform on the Tantra Stage for Pride in San Francisco. She was in rotation at The End Up and did guest spots and Monarch, The Great Northern and Wish. In 2016 Chris was asked to join AirPusher Collective. She has also done guest mixes for FriskyRadio, ProtonRadio and Elastic Beatz and more.

Whether she is spinning for friends and family in her home or on Parade floats and Art Cars in the dessert for Burning Man or Night Clubs Black Velveteen never fails to delight and inspire her audience! In 2018, her Sunrise Set at Sonic Runway on the infamous Airpusher Art Car was recognized as one of the top 9 sets of Burning Man by Billboard Dance. BV was deeply honored by this mention. She has also opened for headliners such as Blond:sh, Donald Glaude and Mat.Joe

In 2021 she was asked to join the wildly popular Noise Complaint crew in Seattle and was delighted to do so. She also curates dj mixes for Proton on Spotify and Apple Music. This lady is busy!!

I was stoked to return to Northern Nights Music Festival for my second year playing – I threw down a Friday night set at the Submerged Sessions stage for an hour of trippy vocals, rolling baselines, house, minimal, techno n' breaks. This was quite fun to hear these tracks blasting out on a proper Danley soundsystem (thanks, Jobi!!) – it's one of my fav sets I've played in awhile. Thanks to everyone who joined 💜

About The Rev:
A lifelong disciple of music and playing instruments since the age of 9, The Rev made the decks his pulpit in 1999. Since then, he has spread his ministry across the globe from New York to Detroit to Black Rock City to Amsterdam and most recently the Bay Area.  

This has included residencies at famed New York institutions like Guernica, playing  alongside international talent like Wolf + Lamb, Adam X, Frankie Bones, Adam Jay, Marco Bailey and Jason Jinx to name a few.

He has recently begun to expand his DJ sets with live improvised Electronic Wind Instrument as well as his own original productions.

Joe Pea is a seasoned electronic music DJ and producer hailing from The Pacific Northwest, USA. His musical journey began with a childhood passion for percussion, leading him to play drums in various bands across the Western United States. In 1999, a transformative experience in the Arizona Desert, turned him onto electronic music and culture, prompting him to transition from live bands to DJing and vinyl collecting. 

Over the past two decades, Joe has become a prominent figure in the West Coast underground dance scene, performing at renowned festivals such as Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, Dirtybird Campout, Desert Hearts, and Oregon Eclipse Festival. He has shared the stage with notable artists including Claude VonStroke, Nick Fanciulli, Pig&Dan, Doc Martin, and many more. 
Although Joe has fully moved to the PNW, he is still a resident DJ at Dance Klassique, San Diego’s longest-running house music weekly. A pillar in the Southern California dance community for over 25 years.

Beyond his performances, Joe is a passionate advocate for the dance floor as a sacred space for community and connection.

Additionally, you can find him dancing and working at music events and festivals all over the U.S., as he is a very strong supporter of the concept of music, fostering community and the dance floor as a sacred space to come together as one.
