Besides the horizon calendars that tracked the rising or setting of the Sun along the local horizon, the mountain cult was also a fundamental aspect of Aztec cosmovision and religion. According to Sahagún, the Aztecs envisioned the space beneath the Earth filled with water, which came from Tlalocan, the paradise of the god of rain, Tlaloc, and from it issued the springs to form the rivers, the lakes and the sea. The purpose of the mountains was to retain the waters as "large vessels or houses full of water and release them when necessary to flood the Earth; that is why they call the villages altepetl which means mountain of water or mountain filled with water".
