Jazz experiments

Hungarian producer Laurine Frost dedicates exclusive mixtape to the memory of Evelyn McHale, who leapt to her death from the Empire State Building in 1947. 

At 1st of May,  10:40 AM the young and pretty Evelyn leaped from the 86th-floor observatory and landed on the roof of a United Nations limousine parked on the street below. Her calmly elegant demeanor, her legs crossed at the ankles, the way the car’s metal folded like sheets and framed her head and arms - perhaps these were the reasons that McHale’s death was given its title as “the most beautiful suicide.” When she died, she was still wearing her pearls and white gloves, her body looked intact . Stunned by her beauty, even in death, Robert C. Wiles snapped the iconic photo of her just 4 minutes after her crash. 
After decades she still lives on through that iconic photo of her final moment. Evelyn's mystical personality and the romance of her story inspired Laurine Frost to recall her last days and visualize her thoughts to the listeners in a theatrical and musically ecletic „soundtrack”.

Oddly this is the first jazz mix I have ever compiled. More of a curated playlist than a mix, though I did some editing for levels and to make all the gaps between songs just the right length. It's mostly more recent favorite discoveries of mine with a lot of the classics I remember my Dad playing regularly while growing up, and a couple more obscure items that I've come across, like Charlie Mingus playing solo piano to open the mix. Most of this jazz is from the same era, more or less. There were some older and some more contemporary pieces I wanted to include but I found they threw the sound and the vibe off somewhat, since the quality of recordings varies so greatly. There is also a lot more weird and more experimental jazz I adore that I did not include in favor of keeping this more relaxed and smooth. It was so much fun to compile, for almost 2 weeks straight I listened to pretty much exclusively jazz, and assembled around 5 hours of music which I then reduced to this shorter ride. Enjoy

It was time for a new one! I listened to a lot of records I had never heard before for this, and also included some favorites of course. The format is similar to the first one, I like doing blocks of 2-3 songs from a particular album or group, and Bill Evans is always great to start with. The time period is roughly the same, late 50s through the 60s, though it ends with a bit more experimental works from Pharoah Sanders from the 70s. Although it's almost an hour longer, there is a bit less variety of artists because lot of the pieces are longer ones, all really great works in my opinion. This is about one of those friends that not only is a great dj, a true music lover, obsessed with photography and politics but always happen to be at a particular place in most of your life-changing sets and shares the same joy, goosebumps and transcends at every beat, bassline, every drop and every mix with you (#nofilter - haha). 

Clovis is one of those people, the type who would sit in a room with me for endless hours listening to a set and sharing that "bass face" of pain....

.....needless to say our music exchange goes beyond dance music. Clovis has been recording some jazz sets lately, ones I listen to all the time. With them and our musical exchange in mind, I asked him if he would record us one of those sets for the mix series and here we have it, the first of this series to step out of electronic sounds and bring us into more organic sounds.
