There’s no room to argue, Joseph Capriati has enjoyed his finest year to date and his escalation as one the principle profiles in techno knows no boundaries. 

The Napoli-born firebrand has just completed a stunning season in Ibiza as a resident of Marco Carola’s Music On at Amnesia. Anyone who caught him play the main room this season will agree – his special ability to combine an infectious stage presence, with razor sharp DJ skills draws techno fans to dancefloor like bees to a honey pot. No wonder island legend Carola’s handpicked him to perform on 8 separate occasions, more than any other artist this season. 

Combine this momentum with an outstanding 2013 that already saw him headline his first coast-to-coast tour of the US, play a historic 12 hour set at the Metropolis in Napoli, plus headline every major techno festival on the planet, the time couldn’t be better for Capriati to unleash ‘Self Portrait’, his sophomore LP. 

Already ingrained in the consciousness of techno lovers this year thanks to ‘Fratello’ and ‘Awake’ the pair of searing dancefloor slayers that were released in June as the album’s first singles, ‘Self Portrait’ goes deeper than the club stormers the Italian is famed for. Over 11 future-facing tracks, Capriati displays his deft production skill to supersede his reputation for bodyslamming dancefloors. 

Tracks such as ‘Electrolytic’, the album’s atmospheric opener evokes mood with a barrage of steely synths, gritty drums and industrial beats, while ‘Self Portrait’, the typically reflective album title track is an understated ambient gem led by warm trickles of melody that pairs nicely with ‘Naked’ which exhibits the producer’s deft skills for moulding sparse stripped back minimal that kicks along with cheeky vox and shuffling percussion. 

He further reinforces his ability to create addictive club rollers with the quirky, squiggly groover ‘Easy Come Easy Go’, while the masterful ‘Basic Elements’, chugs along with rattling industrial percussion before giving way to a sublime wall of melody that’s just the kind of genius fare that gets his diehard fans raising Italian flags inscribed with ‘JOSEPH CAPRIATI KING OF TECHNO’ regularly at this gig. And with an album this good, who are we to argue?

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

Over the past four years, Hayden Payne aka Phase Fatale has earned a reputation as a techno innovator, both for the broad spectrum of dystopian electronics included in DJ sets as well as his deep understanding of synthesis and sound design in his own productions. Having previously released on labels such as Jealous God, Payne made his Unterton debut with last year’s Anubis EP. Since then he has settled into residences at both Berghain in Berlin and Khidi in Tbilisi, released his first LP on Hospital Productions and kicked off his own label BITE with a collaborative EP between himself and Silent Servant.

On his debut 4-track EP for Ostgut Ton, Reverse Fall, The New York native has sharpened the rhythmic contours of his productions, creating an imposing wall of sound within the techno framework. Inspired in part by Crash, J.G. Ballard's dystopian novel on the fetishization of car crashes, Reverse Fall is uncompromising motorized, cybernetic techno – infused with haunting soundtrack-like flourishes reminiscent of films by directors John Carpenter and Dario Argento.

A night drive accelerating at the pace of a dark, melodic bassline and distorted hi-hats. “Reverse Fall” is available across streaming platforms, as a single track and as an instant gratification download with the purchase of the full digital release.

There can be little doubt as to the influence Alan Fitzpatrick has had on the current Drumcode sound. A consistent provider of musically inventive techno that takes its inspiration from a wide palette of influences; Fitzpatrick tracks are immediately recognizable for their refusal to conform to the norm. This latest release, the subject of much hype and anticipation, is no different. Lead track, ‘Skeksis’ conjures up an unlikely fusion of a pumped-up dub techno groove and a 90’s Trance vocal to create a slow-burning, emotive bomb, while ‘For An Endless Night’ rolls out a steady driving rhythm that provides the backdrop for a distinctive chiming melody to sweep in and take over.
