QU'EST-CE QUE C'EST QUE LA MUSIQUE BALEARIC ?

C'est à peu près tout, ou rien. C'est un genre qui ne connait pas de frontière musicale, remontant au début des années 80, lorsque des DJs de toute l'Europe se rendaient à Ibiza pour essayer sur un public nombreux et eclectique, prêt à danser sur TOUT, de nouveaux genres et/ou techniques de mix 🫠
En gros, au delà de la musique, c'est un public qui s'engage à rencontrer le dancefloor avec l'ouverture d'esprit nécessaire pour se laisser emporter par les lubbies d'un DJ qui ne connait aucune contrainte. En d'autres mots: C'EST LA LIBERTÉ ! 🕊️🌈

The Game We Exist In

‘El Rocko, Rockateer, Rocklette, Oldschool Ride' aka Jonny Rock was in Amsterdam to play in Claire on Friday night. He didn’t mind to join us during the day, so he brought a extra bag of records (we have no CDJs in-store), including a dub plate holding one of his edits that he’d cut especially for this trip. Yes!

London based Jonny is known for his love of Middle Eastern sounds. He was at the forefront of the growing interest of Turkish music by helping to promote Mehmet Aslan among other producers, by unearthing Turkish Disco Folk and by releasing his awesome edits (for Hamam Disco under his Afacan alias for instance). Expect a track taken from Disco Hamam 4, some Human League (!) and much more party in this mix.

This is the tenth recording in a series of (themed) Rush Hour in-store broadcasts, recorded on July 27th, 2018. After a live broadcast to Facebook, the music lands on Soundcloud for playback.

The ninth mix in our series comes from long time friend and creative mind behind many previous Second Circle sleeves: Orpheu The Wizard (@orpheuthewizard). Q&A (excerpt) here below.

MFM: Hey Orpheu, so nice to have you on the series. How have you been, recovered from what seems  another busy festival season?

OTW: Heyhey guys, all good here, thanks for having me! I had a good summer indeed with some very nice festivals. But there is always more than just festivals right? It’s been a good year with club gigs all over the world, I have seen a lot of places, opened Dynamic Range, RLR still going strong. Keeping myself busy yeah!

MFM: You've always lived in Amsterdam, right? How do you feel living here now compared to let's say 10 years ago?  

OTW: I have lived here all my life, have lived in different parts of town throughout the years and now live and work in the city centre. Well…… the city has changed. Some of it for good, but also a lot of it for worse unfortunately. I do still enjoy living here though and as many places as I have travelled over the years, Amsterdam still is home.

MFM: You've been involved in culture and it's development within the city of Amsterdam for quite some years now, RLR and Dynamic Range probably being the best known achievements. Do you think a lot about the city and how it's developing (culturally)? 

OTW: I do care about how the city develops, in general but also about how it develops culturally. I feel I am doing my part to contribute to the city’s culture in a positive way and it makes me very happy when I see other people or initiatives that are doing the right thing. 

MFM: Being such a busy man and having a broad interest in sound, what's your trick on staying on point in discovering (new) music and keeping your record box fresh? Assuming you probably get sent quite a lot of music too?

OTW: Give music a chance! And stay interested to hear something you haven’t heard before. Listen to records, labels and artists that you don’t know yet, give music you get sent a quick listen. And trust your ears, that’s all. It takes only a few seconds to know if you want to hear the rest of this tune or not. 

MFM: If you compare being the part-time DJing music enthusiast from years ago with the globe trotting professional DJ that you are nowadays, would you say you as a DJ or your approach to it has changed much? 

OTW: I think it’s change is inevitable because of many factors, context, experience, growth, development, but in the end the essence is the same. When you are playing you want to enjoy the music you play and playing it out to people and you want your crowd to have a good time! 

MFM: What are some key things you found out about and learned in the past 4 years?

OTW: Don’t believe the hype!

MFM: While being so musically interested and coming across so much talent worldwide, did it ever cross your mind to start a label too?

OTW: Yes it has, working on it, teaser in the mix!

MFM: Thanks again for contributing a mix to our series. What can you say about it, did you have a specific idea or approach with it? 

OTW: I love making mixes! The approach was actually to really do a mix like we used to do, a listening/mood experience constructed with records you found in the past months and you hope Tako and Jamie haven’t heard yet haha.
