  'Jimbo's Lullaby' is from the collection of pieces entitled 'Children's Corner" which Debussy wrote for his three year old daughter, whom he nicknamed 'Chouchou" ('little pet' in French.)

The reference below is an excerpt from the  'Debussy' biography written by E. Robert Schmitz, Schmitz  who as well as biographer, was a close personal friend and frequent visitor to the Debussy household.

'Jimbo, a little velvet elephant, pudgy and soft, one of those favorites of Chouchou's allowed to partake in the ceremonials of her own bedtime; but the little elephant, too, must have one last story, one last song before entering the land of Nod, with his charming little mistress."

Pioneer, graffiti artist, drum 'n' bass icon, DJ, actor and producer. Goldie is a total original, a multi-talented complex shape shifter, who’s sold more than 2.5 million records worldwide.

In 2013 Goldie completes a remarkable 20 years as a recording artist. To celebrate this impressive milestone, his label Metalheadz and the iconic ‘ffrr’ dance label are coming together to release Goldie’s first ever career-spanning retrospective entitled “The Alchemist: The Best Of Goldie 1992-2012”. Released on March 11th, on triple-disc CD and digital download, this definitive collection reads like a Drum & Bass almanac.

It was a move to London and a visit to the Rage Club in 1991 that changed everything for the talented graffiti artist from the West Midlands. DJ Fabio and Grooverider were playing that night and gave Goldie his first taste of Jungle. That night a fledgling career in music was born and the rest, as they say, is history. Inspired by what he heard, Goldie went on to write the incredible and hauntingly dark ‘Terminator’, a track that became a massive hit on the burgeoning underground Jungle scene.

Two decades on and this album becomes the first retrospective of Goldie’s long and illustrious career. It is a collection that takes us on a veritable 20 year journey through the Drum & Bass scene, from the epic opening track, ‘Malice In Wonderland’ through to the truly extraordinary ‘Timeless’.

And there’s a brand new track to savour as well. The sublime “Single Petal Of A Rose”, the first new Goldie track of 2013 is exclusive to this collection and a must-hear for fans everywhere.

Disc 3 of the album compiles together the best of Goldie’s mixes for other artists including his sublime interpretation of Bjork’s Isobel’s and Garbage’s ‘Milk’. Other artists’ interpretations of Goldie’s own tracks are also included including the stonking Armand Van Helden remix of ‘Digital’ and the ethereal beauty of the Baby Boy Edit of ‘Inner City Life’.


GOLDIE "SINGLE PETAL OF A ROSE" ( MISTAJAM BBC 1XTRA WORLD EXCLUSIVE )

Track B1 from my original vinyl release back in 1992.

The sample "gosh what a gorgeous smell, oh my god the joint" - is from an old BBC Drama called the Camomile Lawn and originally said ""gosh what a gorgeous smell of beef, oh my god the joint"


The tune was made on an Amiga using Noisetracker (a soundtracker variant) At the time I wasn't trying to get the tunes released had no real idea of what I was doing and had just started making tunes for fun. I sampled things from everywhere, off cassette tapes, from TV shows copied on to VHS, talking/shouting into headphones rather than a mic. Crunching four  breakbeats into one channel as Noisetracker only allowed you 4 channels to play with and basically just throwing stuff together. 

One of my mates Chris (infamous for being on acid at my house for the first time when my parents were on holiday and seeing a picture of me and my sister at Madame Tussauds in the living room stood next to a waxwork of Benny Hill, and saying "fuck me your Dad doesn't  half look like Benny Hill!!!) showed me an issue of Amiga Format magazine asking for rave tunes to be sent in to a record label that were made on the Amiga. 

I sent a tape off and out of 2000 odd tapes that were received by the record label (Delirious Records most famous for The Moog Jungle Muffin) my one got chosen, mainly I think because one of the tunes that was on the tape (not on this EP) sampled the drums from the guy that ran the label's first tune - Rotor Kaleidoscope (love that tune to death still)

I wanted to call myself as an "artist" Arkham Asylum as in the Batman jail for the criminally insane and really liked the way the letters fitted together , both words starting with an A and ending in M with the same amount of letters inbetween. However the label wanted to use my real name "Simon Harris" so as to confuse people into buying it thinking it was by the Simon Harris as in "Bass How Low Can You go".

1000 copies were pressed and split between two distributors, one of the distributors went bust a few days later and 500 went missing and then because of the really bad sampling quality from me not really knowing anything about production or sound quality, the vinyl was never of a high enough quality to play out loud. The tunes were good but just sounded bad through a loud system.

I never heard the tune out raving (although my sister claimed to hear it once but I reckon she was just off her head!) and it all died a death.

A few years ago I googled the EP and was amazed to find some people talking about it on backtotheoldskool.  I put up a few tunes that I had knocking about that were never released, a few people liked them and that inspired me to start producing again.

I'm amazed by the response that my tunes get (I still think most people think I'm the more famous Simon Harris) and feel that I should have put more effort into getting myself out there back in the day but was far too busy with E's, trips and whizz!

But all of this just all goes to show never give up. I have always loved this sound, was never into music before I heard Eon - Spice on some walkman headphones wandering though Harlow town centre. I will always love this sound and am so glad that so many like minded people out there actually appreciate the crap that I throw together. Thankyou!

Simon Harris - Logical Beats (1992 B-Hive Records)

Another tune from a dusty old Amiga disk from around 1992/93 made when I was the tender age of 18/19, proper intense, proper crazy, some mad samples, a drum loop from the amazing Ajax Project Mach III, an ELO sample, some bird from the TV talking about drugs a "real Simon Harris" sample just to confuse people even more plus a load of weird noises!!! 

Listening to it now, I can still feel the drugs rushing through me - hope you do too !!!
