UK producer Louis De Tomaso pushes a vibrant retro sound that’s laced with euphoric intention and has received support from the likes of Krystal Klear, Jennifer Cardini, Kendal, Pablo Bozzi, Tiger and Woods, Perel and Cormac. He comes up trumps here with two new tracks for the well-reputed Exploited imprint.

Channeling classic Eurodance and Italo, ‘Malfunction’ is a riot of a track that’s brimming with strong melodies and motifs. Within seconds you’re assaulted by an array of potent lines weaving away under ticking hi-hats and roomy snare hits, swelling to a tremendous intensity before the undulating bassline rocks in. Big arpeggios, fizzing chords, soaring leads and dramatic riffs abound, with never a dull moment in this super-colourful track. All is woven together seamlessly, erupting like a volcano as the melodies transpose to higher octaves as the track progresses. Any one of these riffs would be strong enough to be the lead refrain on any given track. Louis De Tomaso’s generous spirit instead packs them all into a huge 5 minutes and 40 seconds.

‘Prince’, a track that lay unfinished for nearly 5 years, is more on the hi-NRG tip. Given a new lick of paint by De Tomaso, it’s driven by a camp, sugary lead riff that bursts through the mix like a buzzsaw. Chugging bass arpeggios provide more forward-thrust as the spacious beats hammer away and classic ravey synth sounds hammer out a delightful selection of colourful hooks. A huge build where pitch risers meet rapid-fire claps sends the track rocketing into the ether, exploding in a rainbow of colour. Fun levels are maxxed out on this one.

UK DJ/producer Port Maneau launches his new project Kitsch Records, opening the label with two absorbing productions across ‘Mandala/Apophis’.
Originally from Newcastle-upon-Tyne but now residing in Bristol, talented up-and-comer Port Manteau has introduced his wide-reaching sound palette via the likes of Street Tracks, 10 Steps North and Zerothree as he explores the wider corners of his own electronic influences. Beginning the next chapter of his young career, having supported artists such as Sasha, Hot Since 82 and Yousef, late March welcomes a new project to the mix as he launches his own label, Kitsch. A home for explorations across indie dance, progressive house and electronica, the imprint will look to ‘combine the best of past and present’ to showcase unique and eclectic musical experiences, starting in style with the launch EP ‘Mandala/Apophis’. “I believe in pushing boundaries, experimenting, and carving out a new space in the industry. It’s one thing learning all the technical stuff, but the real effort is creating a totally different track that no one has heard before. My sound is all about taking the best of the music I love from a variety of genres and ending up with something unique.” - Port Manteau.
Powerful and expansive title track ‘Mandala’ opens the package with authority, with a medley of sweeping synths, captivating vocals and energy-building melodies combining for an endorphin-driven anthemic lead offering. Next, ‘Apophis’ unveils a melting pot of sounds, drawing from a wide range of genres, from Italo-influenced leads to bubbling acid basslines, for a scintillating ride to close the show.

Closing out the EP is Alter Ego’s Remix, Roman Fluegel and Joern Elling are in absolutely belting form with a behemoth slice of killer early 00s electro that slips ‘Higher States of Consciousness’ a dose of the ‘Rocker’ treatment. Face-meltingly glorious.

Blanco’s Valkea Music kicks off 2019 with a statement release that showcases “seven songs, seven stories, seven colours”. Across the fantastic tracks, the likes of Thc, Gianmaria Coccoluto & Luca Vera aka Soul Sonic, Amarcord, Wayne Works and more all contribute their wares.
The label kicked off in 2018 with a limited-edition white vinyl EP from Benny Blanco and set out on its mission to release a wide variety of electronic music with some key remixes also included. It was supported by the likes of Agents of Time, Nick Warren, Trikk, Luca Agnelli and Petar Dundov, and now the label broadens its remit once again with this vital seven track compilation.
Up first is Thc from labels like Three Hands and Chapter 24 with the enchanting and exotic ‘Mille e Una Notte.’ It’s a mysterious house cut with all manner of strange percussion and synths drawing you in. Levo then keeps up the diverse cultural influences with an uplifting, melodic bit of house featuring more authentic middle eastern sounding instrumentals. Next up is Pakkio Sans, an established name in the house world who has released on King Street Sounds and Global Underground. His ‘I Need you’ is a forlorn, emotionally wrought track with pained vocal stretched over sombre beats. A whole host of names including the label boss then link for ’Deep Ethnic’, a scintillating cut with widescreen synths.
My Favorite Robot and Aeon associate Amarcord then mixes up cosmic disco and house music with stepping chord work for his majestic ’Colazione A Mezzogiorno’ and Wayne Works really works you into a lather over eight minutes of acid laced, jacked up and percussive house that is restless and infectious. Last of all, label artists Gianmaria Coccoluto & Luca Vera aka Soul Sonic offer the driving house of ‘Lillo’ with its rubbery bass and spaced out Chicago vibes.
This fantastic package covers plenty of house styles, all with real authenticity and invention.
