Dogma is a powerful principle, where doctrine is laid down as incontrovertible truths, even when the truths are false. An example would be the Church in Rome unwavering belief for a thousand years that Earth was the center of our solar system, taking the renaissance to tear-down that dogma. The physician Galen of Pergamon in the 2nd century AD refined the 4th century BC theory of infection spread termed miasma theory that all infections were transferred by smells, a theory so dogmatic that for 1,500 years no other method of infection spread was allowed to percolate into scientific consciousness. It eventually took the work of Louis Pasteur in the mid 1800s to prove infection could spread by other means besides odors, that is, by tiny microscopic buggers which he dubbed the Germ Theory.
