The calm pre-dawn with its promise of the new day to come is broken by the sun piercing the horizon.  Light streaks across the sky, kissing all it touches with gold.  Mundane objects are transformed into works of art by the beauty of this first light. Then the majesty and power of the suns slow warming ascent. 

...and yes I went there, I used tubular bells!

The second song from the cycle Watching the Perseids is Cat's Cradle, an elegy for a much-loved pet. The poem is by Peter Scupham:

A cradle made of string
   For hands to ply and plait,
Teasing a see-saw thread
   For one old journeying cat.

We swung him down the night,
   Mewed in his wicker ark;
His dancing eyes lit up
   The soundless dews and dark.

Summers of goose-grass led
   Down paths we had not made
To nests of tabby gloom,
   Soft play of sun and shade.

Long absence held our breath;
   The house grew wide and bare
Until he called us home.
   I cut out of cold air

   His face with its sharp loook,
His fur grown stray and dim-
   For these long miles of sleep,
Let the earth cradle him.
