The word “parallax” refers to a scientific phenomenon where an object seems to move or transform when an observer changes vantage points. “Parallax” is also the name of a comic book villain, a gigantic cloud of fear. The following piece is an homage to both science and pop culture, a tribute to enormous amorphous antagonists. These villains take many forms, materializing from wisps of smoke and sublimating into thin air. Yet even when they appear to be absent, they are always lurking.
