Those Two Geeks 326: Frank Martin and Love & Death on The Dark Side of the Moon

I created a character named Mr. Sheep that was raised by sheep since a kid, and one of the sheep that bit Mr. Sheep was genetically modified prior to biting Mr. Sheep, giving Mr. Sheep powers like singing and dancing, and Super strength. Mr. Sheep eventually leaves the pack when they are attacked and is taken care of by his owner in a barn, where he meets his Mrs. Sheep. Mr. Sheep is half human, half sheep

Halloween is right around the corner, so we’re temporarily hitting pause on All My Xs (again) to revive our horror series Tomb of the Crypt and discuss The Closet, by James Tynion IV, Gavin Fullerton and Chris O’Halloran, published by Image Comics!

Things aren’t going particularly well for Thom. He and his wife Maggie are packing for a cross-country, and his son Jamie keeps talking about a monster in his bedroom closet. If only the kid would give this monster thing a rest – they’re going to be in Portland in a week, and that closet will be a continent away! Problem solved, right? … Right?

Can Maggie cut him some slack for not throwing out a box of souvenirs from the woman he cheated on her with? Can Jamie really leave his closet monster behind? And can this three-issue story make it intact to that cabin in the woods known as … The Comics Canon?

All My Xs, our miniseries on Marvel Comics’ X-Men, takes a little detour to introduce the Canadian superteam Alpha Flight in 1979’s Uncanny X-Men #120-#121 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne and 1983’s Alpha Flight #1 by John Byrne!

First, the Canadian government wants Wolverine back – and if his friends in the X-Men get in the way, well, too bad for them!

Next, Alpha Flight gets their own ongoing title, just in time to lose their government funding! And to make matters worse, they still have to deal with the gargantuan menace of Tundra!

March 26, 2008, the launch of Graphic Policy. Born out of an interest in doing some more creative writing than what was allowed at work, the site began as a look at comic books, especially of those with political themes. Most importantly, the site was founded on three ideas:

    Transparency – the site would disclose all conflicting relationships, and most importantly disclose when materials were provided to the site for free from publishers, studios, etc., so that you the readers could make an informed decision.
    Open – the site is open to anyone to contribute. We want to provide a safe place for people to add their voice to the comics community and a platform to do so.
    Progressive – this site prides itself on being progressive. Both when it comes to inclusion of individuals (see #2), but also ideas, not just here but in the industry as a whole. We don’t tolerate harassment, bigotry, shaming, or bullying of any sort, as we feel the safer individuals feel to express their ideas, and the greater the diversity of those doing so, the better the industry is.

The site has morphed over the years from its “political roots,” to generally covering the comic industry with previews, reviews, interviews, and general convention coverage. It then morphed again digging into industry demographics, and becoming the leader for that information. In August 2011, the website went to the airwaves to launch Graphic Policy Radio which has aired ever since and then a second podcast Those Two Geeks among numerous other specialty podcasts. The site has evolved into what you see today to cover not just comics, but also movies, television, games, fashion, and technology, while keeping its “geek” roots.

I have 6 soundclouds now, I forgot I had this one. I was inspired to make music in 2008 and started off with hip hop, then I changed my style to more pop and soft rock, and alternative. I thought I was a rapper but i ended up exploring my sound more and realized I like to sing. Im established on google as Snubbs next in line which I was 14 on that album then I switched to lil snubb, a lot of my albums by this name I was age like 14-17. Then I went to the name Jon Dreams .. I have a few albums by that name also, from age 21-25. I go by Misstyc Mask 2, which I made one album called A Kids Story. It has no swears and is for the kids. Now I’ve been going by my real name Jonathan James Soares which I have a lot of music under that name. I keep my fans updated on how to buy my music and Merch. I'm an actor and model also. I have more than 1 account on a lot of apps because of upload limits and storage. If you don't know how to find my music by now your dumb.

When The Roland High Life first started playing together in Boston in the mid-00s, the band had bonded over their scrappy emo/punk upbringings. As working class New England kids, they'd all played in bands from ska to folk-punk to hardcore. As a brand new indie rock band, they aspired to marry those sounds with the mature literary songwriting of artists like Warren Zevon, Elvis Costello, and Jeff Tweedy. 

That mix of high- and low-culture drove the DIY sound behind the band's debut EP, If You Really Want to Hear About It... . It also lead to the ten-year gap before the band released their next album, Another Other Dorset. The band still played together in those intervening years, honing their songwriting craft and Springsteenian pop-punk sound. But the chaos of adulthood had scattered them across the country, forcing the band to take a backseat.

With their newest album, "Songs About Comic Books & Mid-30s Malaise" (out Sept. 8), The Roland High Life has finally come full circle. The songwriting is sharper, using pop poetry to navigate the struggles of adulthood, while also looking backwards towards that nostalgic hope of comic books and youth. The production is more polished, too, with bigger sounds and more harmonies; yet it was all recorded in the their mothers' basements and childhood bedrooms, keeping with the theme of the album.
