There was once a time when being a "rapper" meant something. It was an office held in the community by only the most lyrically inclined. We had to REPRESENT our particular group. We had to be a spokesman for our own self made sub-cultures. HUGE RESPONSIBILITY. If you came wacc on any level, you got shut down and exposed. Claiming that title "rapper" or "MC" was like wearing a target on your chest... PROUDLY... Like BRING IT! THIS IS WHO I AM. THIS IS WHO WE ARE. Truth and skill met in the mind of the true MC. Creating something that wasn't always easy to listen to, but intriguing to hear. So rappers, really LISTEN to what you are creating. Who are you representing? What life experiences are you illustrating? Have you lived that life? Who is the sub-culture for which you speak? I ask myself these questions everytime I write. And it feels good to look in the mirror and say "that's me... all the time."
