John 00 Fleming is a man with whose electronic music career has been equal parts industrious and illustrious. Now spanning two decades or more, he’s been the driving mix-force behind music compilations, now too numerous to count and – for the larger part - a steadfast advocate of ‘the singles school’ of music release.

By contrast JOOF albums have been far more the rarity. It’s only comparatively recently that John has come to embrace them as a platform for his work, first with ‘Nine Lives’ in 2011 and with its ‘13 follow-up successor, ‘One Hundred Ten [W•K•O]’. 

‘Alter Ego’ (released 09/05/2016), though is a one-album-only divergence, that’s wholly distinct from the first two. For its eleven tracks, it sees him tighten his stylistic aperture to focus an album’s worth of material on his embryonic sound. 

Introduced to Psy-trance by Russell ‘Floorplay’ Coultart, the founder of the genre’s ground-forging Transient label, together the pair went on to form JOOF Recordings. Back in 1999, ‘We Have No Reference Of Time’ - their debut studio co-op, marked John’s first trip into the Psy fields. Collaborations with luminaries like Astrix, Astral Projection, Liquid Soul and Infected Mushroom followed, as have releases on Psy label royalty like HOMmega, Iboga, Iono and Nano - all of which have marked waypoints in his ‘parallel universe’ career. 

Now, through the tellingly titled inference of ‘Alter Ego’, he distills all that accumulated expertise into a full album, which travels the thunderous byways, equatorial highways and infinitely hypnotic arteries of Psy.

Packed with fluid rhythms, chasm-deep drops, astral heights and kinetic energy, he delivers Psy with an advanced understanding few others can call upon. 

‘Alter Ego’ also marks the first long-player to come through John’s new Psy-specific imprint, JOOF MANTRA. As is his nature, it’s a release that plays much like a mix comp - each track making sequential sense in context with the next and last. 

Across its firmament, the album leaves no Psy area uncharted. Numbers like its opener, ‘Paranormal’, the noir-ishly hypnotic thrust of ‘Planet X’ and the humid trance-tropic of ‘Dawn Over The Amazon’ typify its deeper, netherworldian Id. Providing ‘Alter’s super-ego psyche meanwhile is the furnace-hot Fahrenheit of ‘Desert Rider’ and ‘Ascension’ (opposite Chile’s Ovnimoon). 


Collectively, ‘Protected By Karma’, ‘Mythological Power’ and the album’s opening single, ‘The Imperial Echoes Of Devastation’ see it cast eyes out East, supplying it with more spiritualistic, shamanic overtones. 

John still leaves plenty of track space for the more elevating, peak-of-the-night fare. His new 2016 remix of ‘Mustang’ splices harmonics into its gene, while his ‘First Take Off’ co-op with Guadium floor-burns with a magnesium-like intensity. 

For the genre’s lovers, a new page has been turned; for John’s fans, likely more eyes still opened. ‘Alter Ego’ comes out through JOOF Mantra 09/05/2016

In a touch under two years, Outburst has forged its way to the centre of trance’s agenda. This month, with the release of its debut two-disc music compilation, Mark opens up a new front for Outburst. 
In keeping with his toughened sonic composite, Mark’s ‘Prism Vol. 1’ disc provides a highly galvanized, breakneck-paced showcase of his label’s tech effect. For the release, he’s also brought Alex di Stefano on-board. The man behind ‘Escape From the Past’ and ‘I’ve Got The Power’ – two of Outburst’s most celebrated releases to date, the Italian has all but sprinted into the trance consciousness and now steps up to mix his first compilation disc. 

So buckle-up tight folks! With music & mixes from leading lights including Ferry Corsten, Cosmic Gate, Aly & Fila, Mauro Picotto, Solarstone, Sunscreem, Heatbeat, Bryan Kearney & Will Atkinson, Joint Operations Centre, Max Graham, Sean Tyas and masses more besides, the first volume of ‘Prism’s been well and truly primed!  

Mark leads the compilation out, and track-wise it comes loaded for bear! Heavy calibre floor ammo including ‘Eterea’ from Mauro Picotto, Solarstone’s ‘Lost Hearts’ (both in their Sherry remix versions) and Mark’s own ‘Gravitational Waves’ & ‘Déjà vu’ lock in its tone. Midsection, Adam Ellis, ReOrder and Ikorus supply a big one-two-three with ‘Mr. Mayhem’, ‘Singularity’ and ‘Twitch’ respectively. ‘The Game Changer’ from Bryan Kearney & Will Atkinson signals another power uptick, before Mark delivers his final salvo through David Forbes’ ‘Chaos Bowl’ ‘Agenda 21’ from 2nd Phase and Joint Operations Centre’s lethal ‘Dexathol’.
On the release of the album, Mark says: “’Outburst pres. Prism’ is the first in a series of releases that aims to encapsulate the most literal meaning of tech-trance: techno meets trance. My guest mixer for this debut edition is Alex Di Stefano - a name that has literally exploded onto the trance scene in recent times. It is a real pleasure for me to have him on this album. I think he is one of the most talented forward-thinking producers out there at the moment.” 

Since making his Outburst debut in 2014, Alex’s studio-stock has done nothing but rise. His ‘Escape From The Dark’ opener and breakout smash ‘I’ve Got The Power’ both feature early in his mix, as do ‘No Pain, No Gain’ and the just-released ‘From Heaven To Inferno’. Hot on their heels are the Italian’s every-bit-as floor-minded reworks of Cosmic Gate’s ‘So Get Up, ‘Amnesia’ from Canada’s Max Graham and ‘Unleash’ from Sean Tyas. Intercut between are Beatport chart dominators like Will Atkinson’s ‘Subconscious’ and Aly & Fila rework of Ferry Corsten’s ‘Beautiful’, as well as a dozen + other floor-flamers besides!

Outburst pres. Prism (Volume 1) - MINI MIX (mixed by Mark Sherry & Alex Di Stefano)

No one saw this one coming, two of the most respected figures in the scene getting together in the recording studio. Gasps of wow have been agasp upon every play of this track on dance floors around the word. The punch of the breakdown lives up to its track title and certainly leaves a long lasting impact. Amazing work.

Since the first EP (parts 1 & 2) released way back in 2003 featuring 'The main voyage' and 'Tour de Trance' followed shortly after by parts 3 & 4, it was always John's intention for this to be a 5 series EP, but never got around to finishing. It's a scratch he needed to itch and 14 years later, he's made it happen.

Never one to be pigeon holed in just one genre, you find here a wide selection of music, 'Spirit awakening' being testament to the much loved deeper side of John, whilst 'This restless planet' takes things on a euphoric Trancy journey. To hammer on the icing of the cake, we take a hard hitting ride with 'The long ranger' 134 BPM of Tech Trance with tons of emotion.

Rather than labour on predictably about the symbolic significance of a collaboration between these two Artists - both intrinsically important to the evolution and resurgence of modern trance, let's just discuss the music. Hemispheres digs deep - subwoofer-rattling deep. The arrangement ploughs the furrows of hypnotic, immersive club music; filters radiate, expand & contract; shards of rhythm shatter and re-assemble. Most importantly, the melody possesses a claw-like hook which buries itself under the skin throughout this 11 minute odyssey.
