A very special edition of Global Trance Grooves this month, as you know I’ve been looking back a lot this month due to my new single ‘Looking back. To Look forward’. Whilst I was digging through my vinyl collection visiting memory lane, I thought whilst holding these special vinyls, wouldn’t it be a good idea to make a mix of theses tracks that were special to me, so I did. I dearly miss the more specialist deeper, Progressive days of Trance and I think its an important history lesson to remember the roots of Trance music and not to forget it. 

Also ss Beatport have made JOOF recordings label of the month, and we’re approaching 20 years of JOOF, I have an excuse to get carried away showcasing many new JOOF recordings tracks in both the Deep and Turbo mixes.

2018 was an a fantastic year for me playing festivals such as BOOM Festival (4-Hour set), Ozora, Creamfields, EDC along with many Open to Close and extended sets, then came the epic ending to the year Beatport making me artist of the week, then JOOF recordings label of the month and recently celebrating 20 years of JOOF recordings. While the JOOF residents focused on looking back at our 20 year history via our 20 years album, this month I’d like to carry on the celebration on by looking at what recent JOOF tracks have stayed in my DJ playlists in the form of Deep and Turbo mixes. I’ve also included some new unreleased material so you can see what flavours we have coming up.

2004 was the year that two old friends, Andreas and Denis, decided to hit the studio to have some fun. After a couple of days the first tune was created and they were both very happy with the result. They decided to continue making music together and so Gaudium was born. Gaudium is the Latin word for satisfaction which is basically what music should be to the ears.
Both Andreas and Denis have been involved in several music projects before they decided to start producing together. At the end of 2004 the Swedish record label Spiral Trax heard a Gaudium track that really caught their attention and that became the start of the first album Nordic Nature. The album was released during the summer 2005 and received great reviews from both fans and critics all over the world, some even claiming it to be the best progressive release of the year (!)

The year after the album was released turned out to be a very productive time for Gaudium and they released tracks on labels like Flow, Plusquam, Sinn-Tech and Yellow Sunshine Explosion. Remixes on tracks by artists like Ace Ventura, Sensifeel, Visua and Symphonix were also made.

Gaudium creates music that can be described as progressive psychedelic trance with elements of both house and techno. This attracts an audience that is used to the sounds of Spiral Trax, Iboga and Digital Structures as well as the crowd that are more familiar with harder progressive house such as Marc O’Tool and Krüger & Coyle.

In 2006 after the sad news that Spiral Trax label group stopped existing Gaudium went back to the studio to focus on not going down with the ship. A new album started to take shape and a record deal with the highly respected Danish label Iboga was made.

Gaudium is a name you will hear a lot from in the future. New remixes, performances around the world and fresh material produced for the second album will be presented. Stay tuned and make sure not to miss any of it.

3 QUESTIONS to NøLAH:

Q: Going through your mix shows a lot of tracks which are classic but not that old yet. When and how did you start making music?

A: Since childhood I have been in the world of music, although with different styles. It was not until the last year of university that I began to be interested in the musical production in the studio and not just to play. I started to make Electronic Music about 3 years ago, although when I started I didn't have very defined the style that I do now. I have always liked different styles of music and since I started until I defined my sound, it’s been about a year.
 
Q: As you’re playing live only, how did you get started to do so? Where did the interest come from to play with hardware and not only to DJ?

A: Yes, currently I only play live and I started almost at the same time that I started producing. I was very clear that the music I wanted to do I wanted to play it, in fact the composition of the music I make it thinking about the live, I usually play a lot until I get the main idea. Both, the production of Electronic Music and live have always been together, I have never imagined producing if I can play my productions, I suppose it is because I have always played in bands and did not contemplate the fact of not playing.
 
Q: Which projects are coming soon and where do we see and hear you playing live next?
 
A: Now I’m working on my next EP, perfecting my sound and my style with new instruments and sounds. My next live dates are in October, I will do a tour of India on the 18th in Delhi, 19 Mumbai and 20 Bangalore. I am very happy with all this.

Nolah - HOW I MET THE BASS #160

LO-FI has kept something up its sleeve for the release of LAST PLACE ON EARTH and that something is Mr Jamie Stevens.

Jamie has graciously lent his skills to LO-FI for our EXPLORATIONS DJ mix series.

Jamie has been making waves through the house/techno community for 20 years, shaking off the cyclic nature of genres and keeping his sound fresh for the time. Jamie’s humble nature, friendly attitude, skills behind the ones and twos and his flawless production has made him a talent to watch and a serious player on the global scene.


Through two decades of countless offerings to the electronica world, two ARIA awards (with band members of Australian live act Infusion, responsible for hit releases such as "Girls Can Be Cruel", "Natural" and "Better World”), collaborations (including one with John Digweed and Nick Muir) and remixes of the world's most revered artists, Jamie’s most recent EP releases are a true indication that Mr Stevens has matured into a sophisticated artist with depth and consistency. Stevens' hugely successful 2013 release on microCastle, "The Wonder of You”, is best described by the label: "This is a production that comes from heart.” To really put the nature of this track into perspective, Guy J gives full respect to Jamie’s musical offering, describing the track as “one of the greatest musical pieces of all time”.

Consistent quality sets in Melbourne’s legendary venues Tramp bar and Revolver have earned him sets at festivals such as Rainbow Serpent, Let Them Eat Cake and Rancho Relaxo. Jamie has also weaved his magic across Argentina, Japan, India, New Caledonia, Germany and Holland and clocked up 25,000 listens for Digweed’s transitions show in March 2019.

Recently, Jamie’s productions have appeared on Bedrock, All Day I Dream (as a collaborative effort with Joe Miller), Cid Inc’s Replug label, Einmusika, Lost & Found, Dave Seaman’s Selador label, Marc Poppcke's Crossfrontier Audio and remixes for Jeremy Olander, D-Nox, Jam & Spoon (with Uone) and Retza all of which garnered high acclaim. His sound continues to be supported by luminaries such as Sasha, Patrice Bäumel (who included a Stevens remix on his BBC Essential Mix), Guy J, John Digweed (where Stevens’ tracks continue to be aired on Digweed’s Transition shows), Joris Voorn, Jody Wisternoff, Hernan Cattaneo and Lee Burridge.

Here at LO-FI we feel that 2019 is Jamie’s best year yet with killer productions, sets and mixes that go on repeat. With upcoming performances at ChiWowWah Town and LAST PLACE ON EARTH, LO-FI is honoured to add Jamie Stevens to the family.

This mix has Jamie taking his signature emotive and atmospheric sound, underpinning it with a nagging groove and boxing it in a sixty minute journey traversing upfront electronica.

To see out the final GTG, Graham Gold takes to the guest mix, a DJ thats contributed so much to the electronic scene via his legendary Kiss FM radio show one o the very first pushing underground dance music to our homes, our cars. He also played a huge part in supporting my own career in the early days, and why I think its fitting he plays this show for us.

John 00 Fleming is an artist who has achieved international success in a career spanning over 30 years without dishonouring his musical essence or fans. A DJ that's known for his music knowledge, a proven musical pioneer and a leader.
His career started at the age of 15 playing his part in the exploding UK rave scene, DJing and promoting evens across the South Coast that soon got the attention of the London underground scene resulting in multiple residencies that instantly put him in the sights of the worlds music media and major record labels opening the doors to his international career.

John went on to mix and compile 40+ DJ mix compilations for labels such as Virgin, Telstar, Sony, and Universal that secured his rise to the top, Gold discs line his studio walls celebrating over 10 million sales along with the worlds leading music store Beatport making John artist of the month acknowledging his investment, loyally and dedication to the electronic scene.
His ability to constantly move forward musically has kept him on the cutting edge frontline of the electronic world throughout his career gaining resect from peers along with building a cult following as he continues to break boundaries of electronic music and genres making him one of the most unique DJ’s on this planet seeing him perform across multiple genres events, yet keeping his integrity in tact with what fans call ‘The JOOF Sound’. The JOOF sound is as unpretentious as the artist, and is best described as deep textured and hypnotic. Performing regularly at the likes of CreamVields festival, EDC festivals, BOOM Festival, Ozora festival, Tomorrowland along with a huge list of clubs from Ministry of Sound, Avalon and Zouk shows just how diverse his attraction is.

As a music producer John’s esteem within the industry has garnered respect from electronic luminaries like Jean Michael Jarre and Muse and while humbly accepting peer endorsement he continues to let his production skills do the talking.
