I grew up on the mountain
with Mama and my dad
a rocky patch of land
was all we had

A messenger rode up one day
said its time to make our stand
Mama cried "he's just a boy"
but Daddy said "he's a man"

A hundred men assembled
in a field outside the town
autumn breeze was blowing
all around

They taught us our maneuvers
and they taught us how to fight
told us that the other side was wrong
and we were right

I left my home in Appalachia

Now I'm marching into battle

We marched along the river
Killing men and boys alike
The smell of death and powder
Filled our nights

I came upon a soldier
His eyes were blue as sky

As the tears filled my eyes
