Das Lied wurde als Dana Dana in jiddischer Sprache für das Musical Esterke (1940–1941) von den jüdischen Künstlern Aaron Zeitlin (Text) und Sholom Secunda (Melodie) geschrieben.[3] Die Worte „Donna Donna“ sollen nach Meinung einiger auf Hebräisch Donaj zurückgehen, Kurzform von Adonai, einer im Hebräischen üblichen Anrede von Gott. Sowohl aus sprachlichen (die damals übliche aschkenasische Aussprache war Adojnoj) als auch religiösen (die Anrufung Gottes in einem einfachen Lied war unüblich) Gründen ist diese Herleitung nicht plausibel.
Secunda schrieb Dana- für Orchester und die Variante Dana Dana für ein Vokalensemble. Der jiddische Text wurde in lateinischer Schrift verfasst. Die Anfangsmelodie bildete zugleich den Abschluss des Liedes. Die Rechte am Lied hatte ab 1940 die New Yorker Mills Music Inc. und in Deutschland der Belwin-Mills Musikverlag in Berlin.
Die erste Übersetzung ins Englische nahm Sholom Secunda selbst vor, sie verbreitete sich aber nicht. Erst die englische Bearbeitung von Sheldon Secunda[4] (Sohn von Betty Secunda und Sholom Secunda[5]) sowie Arthur Kevess und Teddi Schwartz[6] unter dem Titel Donna Donna um 1956 wurde zum Erfolg. Der entscheidende Durchbruch des Liedes kam aber erst durch Aufführungen von Joan Baez 1960 sowie von Donovan 1965.

History of the song
The song was written as Dana Dana in Yiddish for the musical Esterke (1940-1941) by the Jewish artists Aaron Zeitlin (lyrics) and Sholom Secunda (melody).[3] According to some, the words “Donna Donna” go back to the Hebrew Donaj, a short form of Adonai, a common form of address to God in Hebrew. This derivation is not plausible for both linguistic (the common Ashkenazi pronunciation at the time was Adojnoj) and religious (the invocation of God in a simple song was unusual) reasons.
Secunda wrote Dana- for orchestra and the variant Dana Dana for a vocal ensemble. The Yiddish text was written in Latin script. The opening melody also formed the end of the song. The rights to the song were held from 1940 by New York-based Mills Music Inc. and in Germany by Belwin-Mills Musikverlag in Berlin.
The first translation into English was made by Sholom Secunda himself, but it did not spread. It was not until the English adaptation by Sheldon Secunda[4] (son of Betty Secunda and Sholom Secunda[5]) and Arthur Kevess and Teddi Schwartz[6] under the title Donna Donna around 1956 that it became a success. However, the song's decisive breakthrough only came with performances by Joan Baez in 1960 and Donovan in 1965.

Johnson is a lo-fi indie guitarist , singer-songwriter from the North East of England, known for his atmospheric soundscapes and intimate melodies. Supported by ABUS MUSIC, he records under various guises, including Johnson, Johnson and The Phantom Ramms, and Abus Soundscapes, which can all be found on Soundcloud.

His latest project, Within, Without (2024), offers brand-new tracks that explore themes of introspection, blending raw lo-fi textures with hauntingly melodic elements. 

Past collaborations include The Middle Of Life with UK singer songwriter  Brian Peters  and Brazilian artist John Alberto Moraes. The latter collaboration  resulting in the Departures EP.

Johnson's previous EP, Singing to Rooks (2016), is available on Bandcamp and continues to resonate with fans of indie and lo-fi guitar music. The EP  can also be found on YouTube and other music platforms like Spotify and Amazon Muisc. 

Chosen as Soundclouder of the Day, his  “smooth, complex, and melodic,” Johnson’s instrumental work on Crossing the River' highlights his intricate guitar style.
