Soldier's Lament

These three melodies are adapted from traditional Irish tunes taken from 19th and early 20th century folklore sources. The first, The Song Of Oonagh, is described by folklorist Redfern Mason as an example of "fairy music", which he remarks "is music of a perilous fascination for mortals."  He refers to "its delicate aroma," and says that it has also about it "something dreamy and hallucinatory, as though the notes were of ivory or mother-of-pearl."  The second piece, Paisteen Fionn (The Fair-Haired Young Girl), is still well known; the third, usually called The Merry Old Woman, is less known today.  I may not be wholly justified on the basis of their attestations in calling these pieces dances, but whether or not they were ever actually dance tunes, they seem to me to have a dance-like character.

who was poorly clad, one of the most beautiful Irish airs, is very rarely attested and to the best of my knowledge has never been recorded or included in any composition but the present one.  Basic melodies for

In a meadow by the hill: Song for Mezzo-soprano

I haven't yet found a singer for this yet, and usually I don't post songs I don't have an actual singer for since I've never heard a vocal simulator which doesn't sound like a mannequin singing. But some people have said they like the lyrics to this one, so I thought I'd make an exception and post an audio file generated with software using choral ahs for the vocal (even though the vocal is supposed to be a single voice) so anyone interested can get an idea of what it sounds like. If I ever get it performed and recorded, I'll post that instead.

The instrumentation in this audio file is an example; if it is ever performed it can be sung with this arrangement, or any other instrumentation, or even solo.

In a meadow by the hill

F. Flemming's musical setting for Horace's famous Latin ode was immensely popular from the early 19th to the early 20th century, though it seems rarely to be performed or recorded any more. My arrangement is adapted from the versions found in old books. This version is for full SATB chorus. There is a also simpler choral version here on SoundCloud.

Both the original Latin and English translations are very easy to find in books and on the internet, so I haven't added separately lyrics or a translation on this SoundCloud page.  The Latin lyrics are in the pdf score (see below.)

Integer Vitae (full Version)

Vella de vos son amoros is a Renaissance Catalan love song preserved as an a
cappella scored vocal trio in a mid-16th century collection of songs published in
Venice but known as the Cancionero de Upsala, since the only surviving copy of the book
is at the University of Uppsala. The song is sometimes attributed to Mateo Flecha.
This instrumental arrangement for flute quartet is based on that original score. (I've posted other arrangements of this same piece also.)

PROGRAM NOTE: Fairy music, wrote folklorist Redfern Mason in his The Song Lore of Ireland,  “is music of a perilous fascination for mortals." This composition attempts to capture something of those qualities by interweaving passages original with the composer with adaptations of airs considered in Irish folk traditions to be fairy music.  The first of these is adapted from a fiddle tune printed with the title  “The Fairy Reel" in the April  1904 issue of The Journal of the Irish Folk Song Society; the other two are variations on airs included in Mason's book with the titles  “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday" and  “The Song of Oonagh. “

La Rosa Inflorese for Solo Alto Flute

Jon Corelis was born in California and grew up in and around Chicago, where he earned a degree in Classical Languages and Literatures at the College of the University of Chicago. He later took a doctorate in Classics at Stanford, and taught Classics and Humanities at Stanford, the University of California, and the University of Minnesota. After a subsequent career as a software specialist in Silicon Valley, he now lives in Wisconsin. His poetry and other writings have been published in print and on web sites in eight countries, and he has given lectures and readings by invitation in America and Europe. 
He more recently has turned to composing songs and instrumental pieces.  His music has been featured on the web site The Flexible Persona, has been performed in concert by the Wisconsin ensemble a very small consortium, by the New York State flute quartet Party of Four, by the Opus Chorale of West Virginia, and at Denison University's TUTTI 2019 Festival, and has been recorded by flutist Robin Meiksins for her YouTube recording project 365 Days of Flute, and by clarinetist Emily Mehigh for her YouTube recording project The Miniature Month of May.
