Variation 18 of Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini composed in 1934. Rachmaninoff said of this piece: "This one, is for my agent." as he sensed it would become a commercial hit. It's composed by playing upside down the original melody from Paganini. The original is like a piano concerto (solo piano vs orchestra) and I'm trying to do it on a single keyboard with sampled sounds.

The theme was used in the movie Somewhere in Time in 1980 starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.

The instrument is a Clavia Nord Stage 2 using a sampled Bösendorfer grand piano and sampled orchestra strings.

Somewhere In Time: Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini, Variation 18

Get ready for Chopin's 3rd Ballade, Op. 47, a sunny and optimistic tale with a side of dance and mischief. It's like a feel-good movie compared to the darker, stormier siblings in the Ballade family.

Featuring two main themes that play "opposites attract," our first melody soars sky-high, before echoing left-hand responses. Then, a burst of celebratory arpeggios adds some fireworks. The second theme? A flirty dance number, dipping into minor keys but never fully embracing tragedy.

Watch as the dancelike theme gets all dressed up, while the first remains elegantly unchanging. And let's not forget the flamboyant, keyboard-spanning joyride in between.

Written in 1841, the 3rd Ballade proves that Chopin's final decade was nothing short of musical genius. We might never know the exact story behind this lyrical piece, but its narrative roots and natural flow make it the most romantic of the set.

It could be added that nature was provided as an example of exactly how to do this effectively. In this spirit, Autumn Rains is a prayer of gratitude for the opportunity to learn from the natural beauty of this world, and an expression of a sense of respect for the inescapable universal equality that nature imposes.
