Alex has been awarded the Paul Hindemith Prize, and Ivor Novello Composer He was nominated for the Gaudeamus Award for 2022 and was elected to the 9th International Composition Seminar and awarded a commission ILOLLI-POP for Improviser and Ensemble which he played with Ensemble Modern. He has been awarded by the London Sinfonietta’s Writing the Future commission CANDYFOLK- SPACE-DRUM  and has won the RPS Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize, DANKWORTH JAZZ prize for composition BYE and was made a London Symphony Orchestra Panufnik Composer. Alex played and recorded his concerto OD ODY PINk’d for Jazz Musician and Royal National Scottish Orchestra (RSNO). He was a Leverhume Art Scholar with the London Philharmonic Orchestra 2016-2017: NOW WE ARE DUH-DUR and has been awarded the Harriet Cohen Memorial Music Award for his compositions. His piece SPAKE represented the UK in the Orchestral section of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM). He is a commissioned contributor to John Zorn’s Arcana X 2021. He has written six operas including NOGGIN and the WHALE (Massed forces including 500 young instrumentalists and singes) FOR the LOVE of THORNSTIEN SHIVER hosted by English National Opera and Helios Collective, BEL and the DRAGON as part of the Tête à Tête opera festival, the EQUIVOCAL HARRIET BOWDLER at Second Movement Opera and WOOLF MUSIC at the Forge in Camden and RAVEN’s CHILD for Jacob Colier and Orchestra.

As an improvising and jazz trombonist Alex has played as a soloist with Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta,  Riot Ensemble, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), & ensemble x.y. Extensively, Alex writes art-music for musicians in community settings including, innovative ways of writing for young instrumentalists & singers in a post-Roald Dahl world of new-music.  eg: NOGGIN and the WHALE (Massed forces including 500 young instrumentalists and singes), Fly Like a Kitchen, Muffin, Pudding Tummy and The Sound of Magic. Mateus Alves (1982)

Natural de Recife, Pernambuco, iniciou sua carreira musical aos 17 anos tocando baixo elétrico em bandas de música pop, rock e música instrumental/experimental: Profiterolis, Ahlev de Bossa, Embuás, Chambaril e Catarina dee Jah são alguns exemplos de grupos e artistas locais com os quais trabalhou. Em 2006, ingressou no curso de Licenciatura em Música da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), o qual concluiu em 2010.

Em 2008, foi admitido na Orquestra Sinfônica Jovem do Conservatório Pernambucano de Música (OSJCPM) como contrabaixista acústico. Desde então, participou de diversos festivais e temporadas de concerto da OSJCPM - incluindo óperas e concertos com músicos populares como Antônio Carlos Nóbrega, Calixto e Antúlio Madureira. Em 2009, foi convidado a participar da Orquestra Jovem de Pernambuco (de câmara), com a qual se apresentou em festivais internacionais como o Virtuosi, onde acompanhou diversos músicos brasileiros e estrangeiros, entre eles João Carlos Martins (regente), Antonio Meneses (violoncelo) e Catalin Rotaru (contrabaixo). Como contrabaixista acústico, ainda acompanhou músicos como Egberto Gismonti e Wagner Tiso, sendo integrante da orquestra dos festivais MIMO 2008 e 2010, e o percussionista Naná Vasconcelos, como membro da Orquestra Jovem de Pernambuco.

Em 2010, produziu seu primeiro álbum de composições autorais, “Mateus Alves, Música de Câmara e Orquestral”, com apoio do Governo do Estado de Pernambuco através do programa de incentivo à cultura Funcultura. No mesmo ano, teve sua primeira peça orquestral, a suíte “As Duas Estações Nordestinas”, executada e gravada para o álbum pela OSJCPM.

Em 2011, foi admitido no curso de Mestrado em Composição no Royal College of Music (RCM), Londres, Reino Unido, o qual concluiu em 2013 – onde também estudou Música para Cinema. Em Londres, participou de festivais como o London Jazz Festival 2011, sendo contrabaixista da Royal College of Music Big Band – com a qual também se apresentou com o músico Stewart Copland (baterista do The Police) –, e teve peças executadas em recitais do RCM e festivais como o London Festival of Contemporary Church Music 2012.

Em 2013, de volta à sua cidade natal, concluiu as trilhas sonoras dos curta-metragens locais “Em trânsito”, de Marcelo Pedroso (Símio Filmes), e “Rodolfo Mesquita e as Monstruosas Máscaras de Alegria e Felicidade”, de Pedro Severien (Orquestra Cinema Estúdios), com os quais ganhou o prêmio de melhor trilha sonora de curta-metragem no 6o Festival de Cinema de Triunfo, com “Rodolfo Mesquita (...)”, e uma menção honrosa pelas trilhas de ambos os curtas no 15o Festcine (Festival de Curtas de Pernambuco).

Em 2014, continuou seus trabalhos em cinema e ganhou dois Candangos de melhor trilha-sonora no 47o Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro: um pelo longa “Brasil S/A”, de Marcelo Pedroso, e outro pelo curta-metragem “Loja de Reptéis”, de Pedro Severien. Além disso, participou de sessões de gravação com o lendário músico americano Bernie Worrell (Funkadelic), autor da trilha do longa “Prometo um dia deixar essa cidade”, de Daniel Aragão. Atualmente está em fase de produção do seu primeiro curta-metragem (uma animação) intitulado “Bolha”, com o apoio do Funcultura, assim como produzindo trilha-sonoras de outros filmes locais. Paralelamente, continua seus trabalhos de composição e produção musical em diversos projetos.
