Recording of the noise emitted by the satellite antennas of the Esrange space center, in a radius of several hundred meters. The antennas are hidden by the forest, their movements are almost imperceptible, to the point that it is difficult to locate the source of this high-pitched and continuous noise.

Recording 4235.	Evening Chorus (5).	13th May ’24 – 10.06pm.		By the big oak.  	17m45.	Rated 9.  Lewitt-440’s & X8.
The mosquitoes are not at all as noticeable as in other recordings.  A moth ? buzzing about sounds very much like a distant motorbike.  At 3m23 a Mallard ? flies over.  I love how the Bittern sound reverberates through the forest.  At 7m00 a Goose ? flies over.  A distant Robin sings well.  Overall this recording sounds ‘wild.’  Monday the 13th of May 2024.  Awoke at the perfect time, around 3.15am or so and got to work getting the three recorders into place.  I choose places at the edge of the village, two I had prepared in advance.  First I put the lewitts and the X8 under a tree/bush (Hard to tell if it was a large bush or a small tree) that was in blossom.  I wasn’t expecting much to pass through there.  Then across the road and down the way a bit I placed the NT4 (Omni capsules) & the DR100 next to a log cabin, finally I put the MixPre with the 8020’s in the field just around the corner from the Nature School.  Went back inside and lit the fire, going outside now and then to keep a casual eye on things.  Again, not much to do but wait and take in the three systems when I thought the birdsong was waning.  Done some of the processing before going to back to bed, very happy with what I was getting.  Around about 9am I think it was I awoke when the drama group arrived that Robert told me about.  Done a lot more processing of the sounds, I am always surprised how close in birds will come to the mics when no one is around.  Some birds did indeed pass through that large bush, got quite a lot, very pleased with that recording, kept quite a lot of it.  In the evening I went down to the area along the river that leads up to the Silver birch woods.  About half way down is an overgrown path into the pine forest where there is a big old oak tree, I set up the Lewitts with the X8 and left it there while I went down further to the river and Silver birch woods.  Along the straight path I set up the 8020’s with the MixPre.  There was a lot going on but all at low level except for the Thrush Nightingale.  Made a few recordings, one of which was in the Birch woods, there seemed to be less mosquitos in there.  I stayed quite late, made it back to the X8 rig after 2 hours and three minutes.  At the edge of the village I pointed the 440’s out over the river and got a recording of the night sounds. I was getting really tired so I decided to record in the morning but use only one rig then go to bed.  It was only a few hours till getting up again.

Écouter, c’est toujours un peu agrandir le monde. C’est recueillir des traces, accueillir l’inattendu, tisser des présences. Mais c’est aussi garder la mémoire des instants fugaces de ce qui bruisse, bat, résonne et se transforme.

Our March 2025 International guest, Budhaditya Chattopadhyay is a multidisciplinary artist, researcher, and writer. 

Chattopadhyay produces works for exhibition, installation and live performance addressing contemporary issues of environment and ecology, migration, and decoloniality. His works have been widely exhibited, performed, or presented across the globe. Chattopadhyay has an expansive body of scholarly publications in media arts history, artistic research, media theory and aesthetics in leading peer-reviewed journals. He is the author of five books, including The Nomadic Listener (2020), The Auditory Setting (2021), Between the Headphones (2021), and Sound Practices in the Global South (2022). 

Chattopadhyay holds a PhD in Artistic Research and Sound Studies from the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University. 

He is currently a Visiting Professor at the Institute Experimental Design and Media Cultures (IXDM), Basel, Switzerland, and a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design (KMD), University of Bergen, Norway.
