Atish Sets

Hello, August. I consider this month's mix as an extension of where June left off on the lighter, melodic side of deep house. Usually I try to contrast sounds from month to month, but as you may have noticed, there is an absence of a July mix which would was intended to be a darker, more driving collection of music. The truth is that kind of mix didn't work at that particular time for me, so when stepping into August, I threw July out the window and stuck my gut and what I was feeling: easy, beautiful, Music…

I'm pretty excited for Burning Man to say the least. I hope you are lucky enough to have the time and resources to go this year. At risk of sounding parental, if this is your first time burning, or even if you're a veteran, please do remember that Burning Man isn't a music festival. Burning Man is a gathering of people focused on community,  participation, creativity, and survival…which just happens to have music. I do hope you get a chance to see me and other DJs you enjoy play, but hopefully the music will complement the other magical experiences you have on the playa...but feel free listen to all my mixes on the long desert drive there :)...if you do catch me on the playa (on or off the decks), be sure to say hi!

While assembling mix these last few weeks and thinking about the direction I wanted it go, I noticed that elderflower had been popping up in various points in my life. Elderflower is one of my favorite words...it's oxymoronic with the sophistication and experience of an elder contrasted by the youth of a flower in bloom. The taste itself is worth mentioning, which is delicate and sweet in nature…I tried to capture all these things in this mix, sophistication, spirit, delicacy, and sweetness, and I hope that came through. Hope you like it.

Atish mixes the 3rd edition of our Foxcast series. 

"I've respected, followed, and been inspired by the Cityfox crew for a few years now, so it was a real treat to put together Foxcast #3 for them. While I think a majority of my listeners know me for my pretty, lush, and sensitive approach to house music, I was excited to divert from that sound and assemble a collection of tunes that represent my interpretation of the Cityfox sound: dark, trippy, melancholic, at times driving, at times beautiful. Foxcast 3: Atish (January 2014)

This month, we explore the concept of anicca, the Buddhist word for impermanence or change. The mix weaves through sounds that are bombastic vs modest, dark vs light, groovy vs trippy, haunting vs heavenly, and so on...My approach to DJing is to keep sounds and feelings in a constant state of flux, never getting stuck in a single place. I believe a well-crafted mix is a metaphor for life: anicca, anicca...constantly changing, changing...

atish - [044] - june 2014 - soundpark music

These last few years, I've observed a change in my personality transitioning from an extreme extrovert towards an introvert. I now find myself deriving energy by being alone rather than surrounded by people. It's a strange thing though, since as a DJ, I feel most alive when I'm on stage as the center of attention surrounded by people, which happens more now than it did before.

How can this contradiction exist?
Is a shift in personality correcting itself against a change in my behavior?
Or would this change have happened anyway?

These are questions I've been thinking about when putting this mix together. I don't know the answers to them, but maybe they are in this collection of songs I've put together. Hope you enjoy.

As of late I've been observing recurring themes of devotion in my life and in those of people around me. Devotion to the artform, devotion to our friends, family, and lovers, devotion to what we want to achieve. Devotionals, in the religious sense, are a way for humans to get closer to God. While personally I'm not one to preach any religious dogma, I do believe there is a spiritual message is house music that we can all understand, and I tried to communicate that in this mix. Hopefully it came through, and hope you enjoy...

atish - [049] - february 2015 - devotional

The thing I love most about Burning Man is no matter how much you think you've prepared, you still never really know what to expect. The uncertainty, the excitement, the apprehension, and sometimes even the fear of what's just around the corner is what keeps so many of us coming back every year with a renewed childlike wonder - a feeling that seems to slip away as we get older. Sometimes everything goes right, and sometimes things just go wrong. 2014 was a mixed bag for me with some high highs (spending time with amazing people, getting to DJ in the best place in the world, seeing some incredible forms of expression) and low lows (namely falling hard on my back off of a see-saw putting me in constant pain for the entire week - it even hurt to laugh!)...but at the end of the day, I got exactly what I bargained for and couldn't ask for anything more: I experienced the unexpected.

In contrast to the previous two years on the bus, this year I played first on Friday night and took a little sonic stroll around different sounds and moods to open the night before Bedouin beautifully escalated the night into proper party mode...Pardon any sloppy mixing, we can just blame that on my aching back :)

Thanks to everyone who was there early in the night to catch my set, and thanks to everyone listening at home, Robot Heart, and Dr Burridge for the continued support over the years...Having the opportunity to do what I do is such a great gift from all of you.

Everything goes in cycles, both at a macro and micro level.

Perhaps subconsciously in response to the sensitivity of December's mix, which was in response to the thickness of November, which was in part was a response to October's delicacy, which I think may have been a turn from the intensity of my experience at Burning Man, I open February with an obvious driving (dare I say less sophisticated?) edge before cycling and sliding into a comfortable melodic descent.

For March, we explore what I like to call the richer side of deep house. I offer deep sub-bass lows complemented by warm spacey highs, lush synth sweeps, sensual vocal hooks, and a prog-influenced resolution. Progressive house has been entering my consciousness these last few months in various manifestations. These last few years, I admittedly thought "prog" was a dirty word, but as of late I've been finding music that holds on to the melodic beauty of prog, injects deep house grooves, yet still maneuvers away from the cheese the genre has been branded...all of which I think you'll hear in the 2nd half of this mix.
