Disquiet Junto Project 0604: Heaven’s Gate 
The Assignment: Use a picture of the clouds as a plan for adjusting your sound.

Step 1: Think about the use of a gate in music production. A gate can be described as an “on/off switch, allowing signals over threshold to pass while muting everything below.” (It’s likely that discussion will occur during this project regarding useful explanations of the concept.)

Step 2: Take a picture of some clouds.

Step 3: Think of how to interpret the clouds as a model of a gate.

Step 4: Record a track employing the approach you determined in Step 3 using the picture from Step 2.

I took the cover photo in Ashland, Oregon, earlier this year; no filters were employed. Regarding the title, I’m a Michael Cimino admirer.

The Loneliest Voices (disquiet0591)

This trio for one alto and two C flutes was inspired by a lecture titled "Georgia O'Keeffe's Radical Abstraction" in which one of O'Keeffe's works — Abstraction White Rose — was described as existing on a spectrum between realism and abstraction...or perhaps it is paradoxically both at the same time?

It was great listening to all the different tracks starting off this challenge, I'm looking forward to working with what others have been coming up with. I thought I'd offer a rhythm track to the mix, created from preset drum sounds on Logic Pro, live looping and quantizing each of the 9 parts, panning them out then cutting and moving various patterns to spice it up a little.

Making use of two files from Marcus Fischer: 600_nacre_voit-mfischer.wav (which begins and ends the track) and 600_PSU_stairs-mfischer.wav. Each was used with the max/msp nn~ object, with AI models of a human voice and sounds from NASA.

Disquiet Junto Project 0602: Choice Words
The Assignment: Make a piece of music that strives to express a specific word.

Step 1: Choose a word — either a favorite word, or one at random from a dictionary, a book your reading, or any such source.

Step 2: Compose a short piece of music that expresses that word as best you can. Perhaps it communicates an underlying concept, or follows the shape of the word when spoken, or utilizes it as an extremely short lyric. Come up with your own approach, which might be determined by the word, rather than imposed on the word.

Gate of Clouds (disquiet0604)

I took this cloud photo last week whilst sitting on the beach in the early morning attempting to gather my thoughts, just before work. I had just captured a field recording of the sea when I noticed this cloud looming above the cliff edge, so I’ve chucked that in here too for good measure. 

I wanted to somewhat try to capture the mood I was in when I noticed the cloud. 

In response to the prompt I used:

Probability gate on a Kontakt Irish Harp freebie VST I picked up recently which I'd been curious to try out and the prompt seemed as good a time to do so as any. I don't normally used sampled instruments much but this one was quite fun to work with. The multiple probability gates helped to make the rendered image to MIDI data less dense and more listenable to:

disquiet0604 Cloud Gate

For the last project I decided to work with pauses instead of silence because I felt you rarely actually listen to silence in music, even if there is no audio signal. This time, there is no cheating and I recorded some guitar chords with three parts silence to one part guitar. The recording was done with a Zoom audio recorder. My “studio” was very very quiet but unfortunately not completely silent, so I’m unsure about the notes to silence ratio. You will hear what I mean by this.

My goal was to create absolutely free, momentary music with my new Soma Terra and Soma Cosmos and a bit of guitar.
I started and after 18 minutes the journey was over and I had a very dry mouth

Sounds from terra to heaven/hell(disquiet0613)

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.

Jonathan Zorn works as a composer, performer, and curator of experimental, electronic, and improvised music. His electronic music pairs improvising musicians with interactive computer systems to create hybrid, human-machine ensembles. Zorn's interest in vocal utterance has resulted in a series of pieces in which spoken language is interrupted by electronic forces, drawing attention to the gap between speech and sound. Zorn has been active as an improvisor on bass and electronics for 15 years and has performed at Red Cat, the Walker Art Center, the Verona Jazz Festival, the Library of Congress, the Seattle Festival of Improvised Music, Line Space Line Festival, and the Chelsea Art Museum. His work has been published in Ord und Bild, the SEAMUS Journal, Notations 21, and UbuWeb.
