Armed, the brave and noble warriors are fearsome in combat. As members of a people who worshiped the god of war, all men received military training and could be called upon to fight in military campaigns. This habitual exposure to violence led to a society in which social rank was determined based on an individual's military prowess. Elite professional troops were recruited into two corps: the Jaguar Warriors and the Eagle Warriors, who had a social status similar to that of the nobility. They were all battle-hardened soldiers who had proven their ability to take prisoners in combat. The objective of the war was to defeat the enemy troops and bring many prisoners to Tenochtitlán for sacrifice. Along with the armor and the macuahuitl, an obsidian sword, the jaguar warriors wore skins of said animal and could participate in the sacrificial combats.
