After the dynamo sophomore release that was 2013's "Curiosities", New Zealand's Lord Echo returns to Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz label, this time producing Kiwi trio The Elder Statesman comprised of twin brothers and Wellington fixtures Christopher (piano) and Daniel (double bass) Yeabsley with Lord Echo himself on percussion and drums.

On the "A" side, Montreux Sunrise is mellow meander through a laidback early 70s souljazz vibes, while "Trans Alpine Express" picks things up on the B side with a deep, spiritual piano groove, upfront doublebass, and Echo's percussion perfectly in the pocket.

A timeless gem of a 7" from Bastard Jazz, releasing their own namesake for once!

The first Musik For Autobahns was a delight: softly-softly ambient and subtle cuts from the likes of Move D, Suzanne Kraft, Roman Flügel and plenty more besides. Even amongst Rush Hour's bounty that year, it stood proudly out. A ripple of excitement went through BR HQ upon finding out Gerd Janson was lining up a second, with no shortage of marquee signings all coming correct with their A game.

A number of heads come together to translate these thoughts into sound - from Fort Romeau's Drive-esque "Seleno" joyride through to the propulsive "Melancholy" of Disco Nihilist. Perhaps none elicit as many feels as the enveloping opener from Leon Vynehall though.

As well as being a mesmeric mimic of accelerating down Bundesautobahn 5 at daybreak, "Midnight on Rainbow Road" got our Debut nod for three main reasons: firstly, it kicked off last year's sublime set from Gerd & Ata (so, about time); second, it's a welcome return for Mr Vynehall after a richly deserved breakout year; third, dude's got previous with N64 titling. And that's something we can all get behind.

It was 5am and due to a computer failure the queue for check-in at Gatwick airport snaked out of the terminal door. Because of all the audio equipment needed to record a Motor Sport podcast there was no way I could proceed with hand luggage only.

Having tried for a few years to secure Nigel Mansell as a podcast guest it looked like I was going to miss the flight to Jersey and the first proper chance... This was going to be a tough one to explain to editor Damien.

Amazingly – with a little queue jumping – I made the flight and The Mansell Collection in St Helier, Jersey by 10am. The 1992 World Champion was there already, finishing another interview and within 15 minutes of arriving the tape is rolling. 

The next hour is spent talking about his rise to Formula 1, his memories of Colin Chapman, his stint in Indycar, the touring car outings and his thoughts on the likes of Senna, Piquet, Prost and Keke Rosberg. Oct 26, 2015

Nigel Mansell podcast

Modern Studies' debut album Swell to Great is out on digital, CD and vinyl on Song, by Toad Records on the 12th September 2016.

Modern Studies are a chamber pop band from Glasgow-via-Yorkshire. Their quietly experimental landscape songs are played on analogue synths, cello, double bass, drums, guitars, a wine-glass orchestra and, at the creaking centre of things, a Victorian pedal harmonium.

The band came together in early 2015, when Glasgow songwriter Emily Scott recruited old pals and collaborators Pete Harvey (King Creosote, The Leg), Joe Smillie (boss of Glasgow’s The Glad Cafe) and Rob St. John.

Working throughout the year at Pumpkinfield – Pete’s rural Perthshire studio – the band shaped a set of Emily’s skeleton songs, drawing largely from the salt and spray of the sea. This communal arts-und-crafts-werk resulted in their debut LP ‘Swell to Great’ (named after a stop on the wheezing old harmonium), which will be released on Song, by Toad Records of Edinburgh, Scotland in September 2016.

The band also began an ongoing collaboration with London-based label Earth Recordings in 2015, contributing a Shirley Collins cover ‘The Bold Fisherman’ to the ‘Shirley Inspired’ tribute LP. More releases with Earth are planned for later in the year.

Modern Studies will play a selection of UK shows and festivals throughout 2016.

When Phantom Delia turns in on itself, it's equally compelling. "Noya Noya" again finds Willikens drenching her machines in muck; only the rat-a-tat handclaps manage to escape the swamp of rumbling synths and bubbling noises at its core.
