Trance

The story .. so far
In the beginning of the 1990s four guys got together in a basement studio on Bornholm (small island in the Baltic Sea) and founded Merv. The members at that time were Brian Oldenborg, Jan Christiansen, Johnnie Schmidt and Thomas Gylsen. Demo tapes were recorded on DAT and sent to a label in Copenhagen. The label was Mainline Records run by late Henrik Möll and Daniel Mortazavi. The label consisted of several sublabels including Dancecop, which was the label aiming for underground techno releases.

Merv debuted with the EP "Melted Vein" and despite a bad vinyl quality and sound at that time, the record attracted attention enough for years to come. In the following three years follow-up EPs were released, but it never really took off and the band started working with other projects. 

After several years of hiatus (17 years to be exact), a Berlin based label Styrax contacted Merv with the idea of doing a repress of two specific tracks - "Dust" and "Melted Vein". The guy behind the label was Steffen Laschinski aka Rising Sun.

It should not just be a re-press of the originals, but a remastered edition fixing all the audio flaws that were present on the old recordings.

In the meantime Johnnie Schmidt and Thomas Gylsen had left the band. Brian Oldenborg and Jan Christiansen met in the studio once again to look for the old DAT tapes containing the tracks. Luckily they were still intact and were recorded digitally and audio artefacts removed before they were sent to final re-mastering. The EP was named "Re-Melted" and the mastering was done at Dubplates and Mastering which was founded by none other than Basic Channel.

The original was not pressed in large numbers so the news about a repress with enhanced audio was very welcomed by the dub techno collectors. 

The reissue got so much attention that it was obvious to introduce Merv again as a band and in the following years Jan & Brian started producing tracks again.

It was a challenge to get the same vibe since all of the old equipment were long gone and replaced by software based synths and drum machines.

To reproduce the vibes of the Merv sound, analog mixer and synths were brought back in the studio together with the same effects units that shaped the sound in the 90s. 

The journey up until today has been quite a ride with lots of releases on dedicated vinyl labels like Minimood, Ranges, Subwax, Kontakt and many more.

The 2022 Edition was a special one for me, full of mixed feelings and not really in my best mental state. As soon as I was up there and got in the groove I looked up and saw all the smiles and for a moment I forgot all the bad stuff and went for the ride.
So this is my little gift to you all.

Immense thanks for all your kind words received during the festival. Before and after my set. I live for moments like this and to celebrate music in such environments with the best crowds possible.
Small, simple, good music, good people. Thats all I need.

Also thanks for continually supporting Parallel Festival. I have big plans for the future which I hope to make possible.

Laima Adelaide - Opening set Tresor Berlin (new faces), 04.09.2024

Here is the recording of my opening set for new faces at Tresor Berlin.
In this format I only played my own productions and a few remixes. Also it was a challenge to create a storyline with a fixed set of tracks. 
I started to release this sound in 2020 and it has given me a lot of joy to work on music (and also some pain now and then), meet people from the scene and travel to places to perform.

Laima Adelaide - Opening Set New Faces @Tresor Berlin, 4.9.24

We are happy to share the recording from Night Sea's performance at Endzeit in San Francisco.

Night Sea provided us with some words to go alongside the session -

After experiencing the refined vision of psychedelic dancefloor music curated by the team at Mostra Barcelona, we knew that the next direction for us was to integrate all the inspiration we gathered there into our own music. During that same time frame, our friends at Endzeit approached us about collaborating on a show with the legendary Neel in our hometown of Oakland, California. 

Their event series has reignited our love for techno here in the SF Bay Area, crafting a refined and immersive experience with rigorous attention to sound, lighting, space design, and musical programming. On July 20th 2024, what transpired was a hazy dancefloor in a concrete den, brought to life by entranced dancers and a tightly tuned custom sound system from Neptune Audio. 

Using a mix of analog hardware and digital tools, we improvised our way through the arrangement building on the energy of the crowd. 

The recording here is a studio version of that material, created with the MNMT Live podcast in mind. Some moments might sound vaguely familiar, taking stems from our Silent Season album *Still* and remixing them into higher tempos. The majority of this set, however, is made of new compositions exploring an energized view into the hypnotic and meditative style we’ve crafted over the last 8 years together. Expect to see some of this material released via the upcoming Endzeit label later this year. Our immense gratitude to MNMT, Endzeit, Neel, Neptune Audio, Subset Visuals, and our friends who created this opportunity for us. Warm wishes to our listeners from California!

"This set was recorded at dawn on a Sunday morning, closing out a long day of incredibly inspiring music. I hadn’t gone to bed yet and was so locked into the sound that by the time I started playing, I was already deep in a trance. I took over from Formant Value & Simone Bauer’s live set, picking up the momentum where they left off, then gradually brought the BPM down, leaning into psychedelic textures and trance-laced rhythms.

Those two hours flew by - we were all locked in. It’s a rare kind of magic to do what you love in a place like Refractor, where most artists stay for the whole weekend to immerse themselves in the community and support each other. Music has this way of creating deep connections, and you could feel that throughout the festival. We were part of something unique.

And the crowd... what can I say. Even after a full day of dancing, they stayed with me through the entire set, joining me on the sonic journey I was crafting to carry us into the morning."

Swiss-born, London-based artist TSUNIMAN has gracefully imprinted the London scene with their spellbinding selections from the underground, spanning raw trance, spacey techno, tribal rhythms, and progressive delights. IooN - Cosmic Downtempo is the multi-faceted Ambient/Psychedelic
musical form of expression of a free and barefooted soul landed from outer space in 1983.
IooN's music is a slow paced progression of soulful melodies juxtaposed with deep ambient textures and ethereal atmospheres either synthesised
and acoustic derived, to help the listeners to come in contact with their inner soul.
All is due to party experiences blended with knowloedge and curiosity about the aural medium,that’s why you will not read another “he started making music at the age of 5”.
From 2000 on, as a heavy partygoer IooN got so fascinated by the Chill Out side of events,
because this kind of music can shift your brain perception to experience a dreamy trancey state in a different way than average psytrance.
While completing his studies as a Live Audio Engineer he heard a call from within,so he started crafting his very-own form of music,a deep tribal experience, evocation of feelings.
