"Isolation" is the 2nd EP in Jonny Tobin's "Apocalypse" trilogy project. Lush synth chords and funk-infused beats and basslines merge with soaring harmonized synth lines that sizzle and sing. Shifting through moods and vibes that are uplifting with a hint of bittersweet nostalgia, this project was inspired by the moods and feelings that the global pandemic brought on.

A journey through space and Modern Funk. A funky bass driven album by Synthy Electronic Producer/Rapper MORGs TRIPL3-M.

About the piece:

Inspired by music from the late 70s/early 80s. The album captures the transitional period in the disco era. A period where electronic synths were being introduced into music creation. Traditional instrumentals were being lightly supplemented by a driving synth, created from the huge machines we look at as antiques used only by the most devout enthusiasts.

Words from the artist:

"A lot went into this album. I actually started making some of the tracks in 2015/2016 if I remember. I have a phase where I was listening to some of the early funk records. I loved them so much because the sounds are still used today, but in a different way. Those synthesisers and drum machines were geared towards quality, so you get that clean sound. I love the fact that you can play it loud and it still sounds clear on any system. I also started delving deeper into communities online and discovered a whole Modern Funk movement on Soundcloud. I managed to link up with artists such as Lowmac, S-Boogy, ARP-101, B.Bravo and many more who are still part of the movement today. I also made what in my opinion is one of the best G-Funk/Modern Funk playlists out there, which I compiled over 3 or 4 years. I also took time to listen to the classics and found out it was its own thing. Like literally the hip hop of its time. So many wonderful tracks and artists. And we have to pay tribute to their art direction and music covers. A big reason why I’m a fan of the funk. I know why artists like Snoop Dogg, Dr.Dre, Kendrick Lamar and Nipsey Hussle always paid homage through their music."

Producer Nitram Zeus and vocalist Drina J join forces to bring you two slabs of sophisticated modern funk in all of its glowing neon glory. "All Night Long" makes no attempt to conceal its obvious dance floor appeal. Quantized synth-drenched grooves reminiscent of The System combine with an intensity to evoke thoughts of peak hour movement at Paradise Garage. Drina J's performance shines through beautifully and balances the retro-future production of the song with more contemporary vocal stylings. On "Love Language," the duo is joined by Temu who contributes his own vocal alongside Drina over a more midtempo track that glistens with icy DX7 chords, and should be well-received by anyone following the current resurgence of the UK street soul subgenre.

As always, we're bringing these two gems into physical form with a limited blue vinyl 7" plus picture cover, limited to just 150 copies!

Brooklyn-based Bastard Jazz Recordings is proud to present The Kosmichemusik EP by Montreal/Vancouver duo Potatohead People (aka producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical) who had previously created internet buzz through their digital-only releases on netlabel Jellyfish Recordings. Their debut for Bastard Jazz is a trip through the mellow synth-jazz hip-hop style they’ve become known for. 

The EP kicks off with “Kosmichemusik”, a chugging joint with humming bass, gritty drums and well polished glimmering synths setting the mood proper. Next up, “It Gets Good” features Vancouver mainstay MC and renaissance man Moka Only spitting mellow Sunday-morning style rhymes over Potatoheads deep and moody hip-hop vibes, while “Blossoms” features Canadian vocalist and frequent collaborator Claire Mortifee providing gorgeous, quirky vocals over a bubbling, bouncy track with subdued bass, guitar and Rhodes weaving themselves in.  Next up, “Love Hz” is an instrumental cut with crispy drums, ghostly vocal stabs, a catchy bubbling bassline and pulsing keyboards, while “Back To My Shit" is a lovelorn tale of breakup and redemption featuring the rhymes of Detroit's Frank Nitt (Frank'n'Dank, J. Dilla) with very catchy yet deep synth-heavy production from the Potatohead People. The EP rounds off with “Journey”, an expedition the deeper realms of beat music with subaqueous synths, lifting strings, and neck-snapping drums.  

Bastard Jazz will also be releasing a limited edition 7” from this project featuring “Love Hz” and “Back To My Shit” on Valentine’s Day for all the heart-breakers and/or broken hearted.
