　本当に久しぶりにSOUL SCREAM『THE DEEP』を聴いて、まずはっとさせられたのは、HAB I SCREAMとE.G.G.MAN とShikiのリリックに表現されているクールな視点と観察眼、それと、ラップのフロウとライミングそのものに宿る物語性だった。1996年当時、彼らはすでにこんな風に、路上や街の暗闇、都会の夜を見つめ、都市生活者の孤独やさびしさやブルーに寄り添うリリックを書き、フロウしていたのかと。直接的でもあるが、伏線を張りつつ物語を進行させるE.G.G.MAN の妙技にはとくに引き込まれる。『THE DEEP』をはじめて聴いた15、6歳のころには気づかなかったことがたくさんあった。自分が、2000年代以降の日本のラップが成し遂げたとばかり思い込んでいたある種のリリシズムが、SOUL SCREAMの『THE DEEP』にはあったのだ。これはリアルな話だ。DJ Celory、DJ Alergie、DJ Tonk、Inovader、Mummy-Dのメロウネスとダークネスが交錯するトラックは、最高のムードを演出している。見当違いと思われる方もいらっしゃるだろうが、“0番線”や“黒い月の夜”を聴くと、僕は、岡崎京子のあの漫画や、ceroのあの曲を思い出す。

日本のヒップホップシーンの創世記からパワーライスクルー名義で活動を続けていたメンバーが1995年にソウルスクリームとして再スタート。MCのひとりで あったシキ(SHIKI)が脱退、4人組となり新生ソウルスクリームとしてメジャーデビュー。メンバーは独特の声とフロウ(節回し)で人気の高いハヴ・アイ・スク リーム(HAB I SCREAM)、ラッパーの間でも実力派として一目置かれるイジジマン (E.G.G.MAN)、洋邦問わずプロデュース&リミックスワークの多さで知られるDJ セロリ(DJ CELORY)、「影の主役」こと、エンジニア&トラックメイカーのアレル ギー(ALG)の4人で構成。自然体であり続ける彼等のスタイルは日本語ラップに体して持たれている既存のイメージを一新し、高く評価されている。DJ SPINNA 率いるJIGMASTASとの全国ツアーやさまざまなレコーディングなど海外のアーティストとの交流も積極的に行い、日本におけるヒップホップの新しい概念を提示した。現在各ソロプロジェクトを進行中。
