Peg Leg Howell was born on a farm in Eatonton, Georgia, United States, and taught himself guitar at the age of 21. Over time he became skilled in pre-Piedmont finger picking and slide guitar techniques. He continued working on the farm until he was shot in a fight, as a result of which he lost his right leg and began working full-time as a musician.[2] In 1923 he moved to Atlanta, Georgia and began playing on street corners, but also served a period in prison for bootlegging liquor. Howell died in Atlanta in 1966

This song started as a bass and percussion track by Vlad, and while I loved the bass playing there were certain pieces that really stood out as solid groove components. I asked Vlad for permission to "chop" his track "into bits" which he granted. I took those pieces and sewed them together in a verse/b-verse/chorus, added guitar and drums and then private-posted the results so Vlad could hear what I had done. At this point, the track was fondly dubbed "Frankie" as it was much like a Frankenstein version of its former self. It was here where I realized this was a song that could benefit greatly from vocals and some additional instruments. I put together some lyrics, did a quick arrangement and recruited my trusty friend Greg Hurley to do the vocals. The track was really taking on a Steely Dan vibe and I knew Greg would be a perfect fit - but knowing a lot of my favourite Dan tunes had sax in them I decided I really needed a sax player to have a go at it. Enter Mr. Dave McKeown, who generously provided a sax solo, a unison part over the "hook" that was originally a bass lick done by Vlad and some lovely riffs at the end of the track. Working with these fellows has been an amazing experience and I am honored to have them collaborate with me on this track. Special thanks go to Greg who produced many vocal takes and really took the time to get the best possible result, as well as providing some of his trademark multi-layered slide parts.

The lyrics to this song were inspired by the euro-zone debt crisis that was born in Greece. Over the past decade Greece went on a spending spree that drove the country deeply in debt, to the point where defaulting on the interest payment was imminent. This sparked panic amongst the euro-based countries as the default threatened the well being of all participating economic parties. The only way to save the euro-based economy from collapse was to bail Greece out, a tactic led by Germany and France to the tune of 240 billion euros but the terms of the bailout were extremely harsh. It was a hole that Greece could never emerge from and trading partners such as China put pressure on the euro-zone leaders to fix the problem. A massive debt restructuring plan in 2012 cleared the way for the "troika" (IMF, European Commission and European Central Bank) to come forward with another massive bailout package in order to help Greece avoid default. While this saved the euro-based economy, the beneficiaries did not include Greece and the repayment structure left the country and its people in dire straits.

In some musically vibrant corners of the world, innovation is the tradition. 

So it is in Mali, where the sounds of the Saharan north have mingled with an array of West African traditions in the south. Musicians like Andra Kouyaté show how his homeland’s deep and diverse roots are a constant source of innovative inspiration. 

The young scion of a profoundly respected griot family, Kouyaté has invented instruments, transformed Malian standards into fresh new pieces, and taken a contemporary ear to traditional sounds, incorporating pop and reggae with the effortless aplomb that has put Mali on the world’s musical map.

On his first major international release, Andra and his youthful ensemble Sèkè Chi bring a wide-ranging, aesthetically linked set of songs on Saro (Studio Mali; July 31, 2012). Saro features contributions by Amadou and Mariam; by wife and local star Mah Bara Soumano; by older brother Bassekou Kouyaté; by respected Malian singer Ami Sacko; by Harouna Samake the kamele n’goni player for Salif Keita; and by balafon whiz Lassana Diabaté of the Grammy-winning project AfroCubism. The album reveals Andra’s stunning ability to embrace not only all the musical possibilities of Mali’s many traditions, but also a relentless drive to create and re-imagine the music he loves.
