Perhaps this is how wi-fi sounds like...
Materials Used: Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, telephone pickup, Macbook Pro running SuperCollider.
How it was made: A telephone pickup device converts electromagnetic signals of a machine into audible sound. I find that the wireless router creates interesting sounds when there is a communication between the router and the computer or mobile devices.

In Nested Duets, an ensemble of any size and kind can improvise with one or more laptops running a generative music app. The computer has two roles:  it provides possible pitch choices for the human performers and creates accompanying electronic sounds. The performance instruction is on the computer screen.

I recently noticed that I have much less hair than a few years ago. I am not sad about it, but I thought I should make a piece  about it. I used no-input mixer, electromagnetic pickup, analog synthesizer, and dancing toy cat for the piece.

Eyelid Spasm

Original recordings of ponds from Gainesville, FL and Ellicott City, MD are used in this slowly-changing soundscapes. In one of the late night field recording sessions, there was a swarm of fireflies.  That night night was surreal. I wanted to express that personal and intimate experience with electronic part.

Fireflies and Cicadas

In Armor+2, the interactive computer part acts as an extension of the clarinet. It adds harmony, extends melodic phrase, and creates rhythmic accompaniment that is difficult/impossible for a human accompaniment. The computer part’s role is similar to that of a rare enchanted item in a role-playing game.

This piece is a praise on things and events that are beyond my comprehension and control. Effect of subtle sonic changes on my mind, body, and soul is an example of such things. 



Hallelujah

Gainesville Soundscape is an homage to a city that I love both for its people and its natural environment. The composition was created using signature sounds recorded at locations whose soundscapes I find most aesthetically compelling—namely, the swamp and the university. It uses field recordings of a small pond taken between March and May of 2007 as well as the sound of carillon at the University of Florida. As the time passed from spring to summer in northern Florida, I captured the variations in the sonic environment of the pond and its surrounding forest. The result of recombining and compressing many weeks of recordings into this 15-minute section is a “greatest hits” of the pond and the university featuring an interview with crickets, a frog choir’s concert, resonance of the carillon bells, and the inevitable intervention of cars and water sprinklers.

Elegy No. 2

In reading Collins' Handmade Electronic Music, I learned that a telephone pickup  device converts electromagnetic signals of a machine into audible sound. The microphone acts like a stethoscope for electronic devices since the user can listen and analyze different parts of a complex entity, such as computer, without visual cues. In this piece, the performer examines the internal organs of a laptop using such microphone and digitally processes the sound in real-time.

Original field recording of 2012 summer pond is accompanied by computer-geterated tones. Monet's lily pond paintings were my sources of inspiration for this piece.

This is an intimate conversation between the guitar and the voice on being hungry and poor. The electronic part in the piece represents the hunger: it influences the person's thoughts, emotions, and actions, however subtle or disruptive it is. 
The piece was commissioned by The Oakland University Guitar Ensemble (Bret Hoag, director) as a part of the Bridging the Gaps: Guitars for Social Justice project.

Decrescendo

Func Step Mode is a solo piece featuring two instruments I love: a no-input mixer and a drum machine. The output of the drum machine feeds into the no-input mixer affecting the rhythm and timbre of already-rich sound palette. The no-input (or rather, one-input) mixer thus becomes an analog audio processor with too many knobs to control, which makes every improvisation thrilling and daunting for me. The hardware and their setup for Func Step Mode are attenable and replicable, but I think I play these instruments with a distinct voice.

Func Step Mode

Snapshots is a piece for bass clarinet and computer. The bass clarinet part consists of  several disjunct phrases. The computer part "glues" these phrases with digital signal processing techniques. I should also note that no sounds were pre-recorded, and all sounds were processed in real-time using SuperCollider. This gives a flexibility and performance freedom for the clarinetist. I had an interview with Elliott Sharp on Feb 5, 2013 for a local music website. Elliott proposed an idea of doing a field recording session while we do the interview. We met at Philly's 30th Street Station, and recorded the waiting area, JFK bridge that crosses Schuykill River, seagulls, little hails falling on trees. This is a soundscape composition using sounds from the interview+field recording session.

The computer part is algorithmically generated so that the timing and the dynamics of the accompanying part varies from one performance to another. The harmonica sound gradually moves to a larger room as the piece progresses.

An improvisation for celesta and recorded sound. The sound of the waves were recorded from Myrtle Beach, SC, and Kill Devil Hills, NC. The celesta I played was discovered at work's storage room. It is not in the best condition, and that is what I love about it.
