Combining inner piano mechanics and soft, warm, slow and melancholic piano sound, Entzaubert draws the listener into the heavy feeling of threading our way on in a disenchanted modern world. Entzaubert is the single of my upcoming 'Ether' neoclassical piano album.

Ether has gone into the ether as of this morning.

An album of warm multi-instrumental neoclassical compositions, piano, synth, percussion and harmonium-based. It features thirteen songs composed and recorded over a period of four years, from November 2018 to Jan 2022. I find that my music can be and actually often is interpreted in diverging ways: for some it’s very still and soothing, for others rather discomforting and restless. There’s probably a bit of both in it :) If anything, to me this album speaks to the theme of processing the old and creating space for the new. It’s about taking in and growing from the losses inevitably presented in life (Earth, Dusk), the continuing quest to let go (Amber, Sera) of the old complicated self and its edginess (Hoede Pt. I), anger (Ira), paranoia (Peaks) and felt alienation (Sine, Entzaubert). To arrive somewhere new (A Start), thankfully and mysteriously enough moving into deeper ground (There, Soll Es Sein, Ether).

Ether

‘Stroom’ is out as of today, featuring fourteen neoclassical compositions, composed and recorded over a period of five years, from April 2017 to August 2022.

'Release' could hardly be more aptly formulated, as the album is about just that: the clarity and relieve that comes with releasing, and the unrest when release is blocked. ‘Stroom’ at its essence is an album on love lost and found, change welcomed and resisted. If anything, it reflects my own process of releasing and embracing those parts not yet ready for it.

Water and electricity have been the underlying metaphors in composing the music, writing the poetry, and undertaking the photography and videography for ‘Stroom’. In conjunction, these two elements symbolize the ocean-wave-like peace and clarity experienced when smoothlessly tuned into the flow of life, but also the electrical tension and short-circuit experienced when that flow is resisted and when an inner 'no' is manifesting in the body.

For ‘Stroom’ I’ve experimented with an instrument I hadn’t used before really: words ;) Every song corresponds with its own poem – written in my native language. Additionally, I’ve been shooting pictures and videos – mostly inspired by nature, and especially water – that also have been carefully linked to the music and text. The songs, images and poems belong together, and are best enjoyed in conjunction with each other. You might do so through Spotify (link in bio) by checking out the individual canvases for each song. Another option is getting one of the physical album booklets (coming in very limited edition), featuring all poetry and images tied to the album. Check out my Bandcamp page for this. For mastering I returned once again to Jochem from Studio van Schuppen, fine-tuning the tracks together into the late hours. Thanks, Jochem.

Here and there people speak about similiarities between certain electronic and classical music - the deeper listening experience, that envokes certain emotions through purely melodic progressions, that are bathed in crescending storytelling. The Neoclassical movement further intertwines the symbiosis of these fairly different genres and might underline the comparison between the two. After the rise of world-renowned artists like Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds and others, the artistic pool has started to grow within this direction.

With an ear for hypnotic repetitions and mysterious tension, Joram Feitsma further developes the spheres of neoclassical music. His dexterity and courage to push for improvised sections, that are created through his hands and onto the piano, introduce you to indescribable atmospheres. Through a strong focus on the back-and-forth play between silence and loudness, Joram captures unfiltered and vast emotions from vulnerable to ecstatic, while mostly relying on melancholic ideas that feel deep and connecting. This special set today is a first taste of Joram's ability to create a wide space, to invite you into a ride of emotional weight, while exploring various places and feelings, going up and down and hopefully taking your hand into a fascinating genre, created by just one instrument and two human hands.

Raised in a small village in the very north of the Netherlands and currently residing in Utrecht, Feitsma essentially contributed new nuances to the ever-increasing scene of piano-driven music - an instrument he started to sink his teeth into at an early age already - with his 2019 debut “Under“. The album combined the timeless with the contemporary, offering an intense ride which instantly triggers a palette of emotions among the audience they weren’t aware they were hiding. Two years later, Feitsma’s exploration of the manifold possibilities to manipulate and exhaust his trusted piano continues with a 15-track album titled “Flux“, which feels like the logical successor to “Under“, even though it isn’t shying away from subtlety breaking fresh musical ground. The music of Joram Feitsma is an elaborate affair, it’s deeply heartfelt, it’s sensual, it’s ambivalent, it’s volatile, it’s stunningly beautiful - it’s a work of transience that’s here to stay with the power to emotionally destroy you in the best possible way.

Plentiful in its exhortation, rich in its search for the meaning in emotion while the accompanying instrumentation seemingly feels restrained, poignant to the point of haunting intensity. Even the playing is exhilarating when it is being quiet. The thing about experiencing Stroom is the sheer quality of detail. As if each note means something on its own, as if each piece occupies exactly the right time.
