Fittingly, it is REEL PEOPLE who deliver release number ‘100’ for the REEL PEOPLE MUSIC imprint founded in their impeccably soulful image over 13 years ago. SOMETHING NEW is an ultra-tight collab with Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter MUHSINAH which more than demonstrates the consistent strength in depth that the REEL PEOPLE name has become globally known for.

Unfurling swinging afro-drums beneath uplifting sweeps of synthesizer, dubby chord stabs and MUHSINAH’s seductive vocals on embracing different relationships and experiences, SOMETHING NEW is a seriously stylish cut. The song’s rich mix of sounds and sentiment brings incomparable warmth and feeling to the dancefloor.

REEL PEOPLE, spearheaded by talented triumvirate OLI LAZARUS, MIKE PATTO and TONI ECONOMIDES, builds on a slew of quality releases on the RPM label this year including remixes of KELLI SAE – RIGHT NOW (GRANT NELSON) and ROBIN S - SHOW ME LOVE (EMMACULATE) and, most recently, TURBOJAZZ & SEAN MCCABE interpretations of LYDIA HARRELL’s SUNSHINE ANDERSON cover HEARD IT ALL BEFORE.

Hailing from Washington DC, MUHSINAH continues to push the boundaries of soul and electronic fusion. Her previous boundary-breaking output has, impressively, earned the attention of luminaries ranging from COMMON to RADIOHEAD’s THOM YORKE and makes MUHSINAH the perfect studio partner for a release closing one epic REEL PEOPLE MUSIC chapter and starting an exciting new one.

Our premiere today comes to you from an absolute legend and storied producer in the house world, @dj-aakmael. Aakmael has been releasing heater and heater for well over the last decade for respected dance labels like Unified Records, Kolours, Church UK, as well as his own imprint Unxpozd Entertainment. Preserving that deep underground sound alongside as he describes, "more raw, new nostalgia with that lite-jazz glaze," Aakmael's newest outing, Tales from the Deep Side, arrives on @axeonwax-records, and what a fitting home it is. This EP is about as earnest as it gets, mixing just the right samples and chords with the relentless shuffle that Aakmael has made his own since 2004.

A1 is titled appropriately enough, Deep Side. From the moment it kicks off it's not hard to see what selectors such as Kai Alce, Deejay Astral, and Chaos in the CBD see in Aakmael's work that makes it so enticing. A fully jazzed out lead line attacks from the get go; as the track builds steam, so to does it's percussive heft. Hisses, clicks, and swung hats gather like a snowball rolling down a hill---all of the sudden this track is massive and you barely see it coming. Panning synth flutters enter the mix around the 2 min mark, locking in the spacier elements of the track before it picks up steam once more, galloping into its final stretch with sparkling vocal cuts and glistening sheen fully in tow.

WotNot Music is a London-based record label putting out "music for the open minded". With over thirty releases under their belt they have been home to many a producer, with certain names such as Glenn Astro, K15 and Soccer96 being particular standouts. Transcending traditional genre boundaries, their output sees influences from all ends of the sonic spectrum where jazz, broken beat, house and others are equally at home. Release number 32 comes from Danvers (soundcloud), who can now be considered a regular on the label as this is his second EP and third release overall for WotNot.

The "Interludes" EP features three originals and two remixes of the B1 cut. Starting off the EP is Mason, an off-beat heater with delectable jazzy flavours and some easily recognized vocal chops from none other than Puff Daddy. Aye Ata is the big room pick of the bunch, packed full of thumping, broken beat kicks, heavily reverbed percussion and just the right amount of pulsing chord stabs. 1997 perhaps takes a more recognizable approach with a 4x4 rhythm, heavy sub and pulsing chords while Diddy's voice makes another appearance, this time giving an almost eerie feel to the composition. Frits Wentink gives us his take on 1997 with his familiar wonky and lo-fi sound, turning the original into an almost unrecognizable lo-fi groover.

The final remix and our premiere today comes from fellow Londoner Warren Xclnce and features rising musician Joe Armon-Jones on keyboard duties. This cut was a surprise gift rework from Warren to his 38 East studio partner, Danvers. The chords from 1997 are retained but the natural sounding shuffling and pattering percussion give the track a completely different feel. Joe Armon-Jones sprinkles quite a bit of his jazzy magic around them, noodling on the ever familiar yet always pleasing Rhodes piano, which transforms this composition into a deep and mesmerizing gem.

A Song From Nothing #4 (Dan Kye)

Selectors Assemble are back in 2021 with another dopetastic premiere, this time featuring the CoOp Presents artist Sivey and his remix for Nikitch & Kuna Maze – the track titled 46 RUE DU FORT was orginally released on Nikitch & Kuna Maze’s first collaborative album titled ‘Debuts’ (on Tru-Thoughts records). The release also includes a remix from Crafty 893 and will be aviable to buy on January 14th.
