Deep house heroes Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson have been playing records and producing music for over two decades. With releases on esteemed labels like Large, Innervisions, Local Talk, Freerange and Defected, their 90s residency at the legendary Sir Henry’s pretty much introduced a generation of Irish clubbers to house.  Starting out on pirate radio, their long standing FGD radio show is going strong.

 

‘This Bit of Earth’ is a collection of tracks out on their home label Go Deep, their third album to date. Work began in the relative normality of 2019, finishing the tracks over the strange summer of 2020.  The result mirrors the thoughts that such upheaval brings up - our world and our place in it - while also functioning as a kind of travelogue of journeys past and planned, real and imaginary. Mixing samples with modular synths, programmed drums with jazz loops, and quirky plugins with outboard gear, the album ranges far and wide while retaining a warm, natural sound.

The title track ‘This Bit Of Earth’ opens on an ambiguous note. A double bass motif weaves around a misheard vocal sample, layers of piano and vibraphone take up the call, as it gradually spins off axis to a distorted, disjointed finish.  A highlight for me is the sonically stunning ‘Suburban Key’, with its dusty groove and fast paced drums, piano, and cinematic strings reminiscent of a Four Hero orchestral masterpiece.  ‘Alice on Jupiter’ takes a deep breath and blends field recordings, gentle pads, modular bursts and a recurring melody. ‘Back Trace Dub’ strolls the imagined streets of Irish author Kevin Barry’s ‘City of Bohane’, noting the “taint of badness” in the air and revelling in the tense, dub-noir atmosphere. The spoken word intro of ‘I Could See’ expresses the dread of confinement and the relief and ecstasy of release, a theme the music reflects as it steadily builds to a joyful climax. Closing the album on an optimistic note, the languid, emotional ‘Culatra Ferry’ remembers better, beautiful days in the sun and looks hopefully forward to more.

The mysterious Dexter Jones explodes onto Hot Digits Music with “Down To D Town”, an eclectic array of disco and boogie tinged tracks to suit all tastes. 
Dexter flexes his slo-mo balearic muscles with opener “Feel”, combining low slung funk with sleek female Vox for a superb set opening slice of nu-disco. 
We ramp up the funk pressure with title track “Down to D Town” that’s has a groove that won’t let up from the get go. With its lashings of bombastic boogie riffs and heads down funk attitude is a proper wiggler. No messing about there! Dexter then takes things deeper with “Jan Jam”, a head-nodding nugget of disco bliss before the icing on the cake comes in the form of “I Want You Back”, an 80’s doogiefied freak-out that’s gonna get the floor burning up!
