O Talking Heads começou a carreira tocando no CBGB. Quando o David Byrne e cia foram incluídos no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, em 2002, agradeceram o Hilly Cristal pela oportunidade.
David Byrne, Chris Frantz e Tina Weymouth eram ex-alunos da Rhode Island School of Design. Em 1975 David e Chris iniciaram uma banda chamada The Artistics que não durou muito. Aí o Chris deu força para sua namorada Tina aprender a tocar baixo e formaram o Talking Heads.
O primeiro show da banda foi no CBGB abrindo para os Ramones, em 1975. O primeiro album veio dois anos depois em 1977.
Não conheço a discografia do Talking Heads tão bem assim, mas gosto de várias músicas. A banda é considerada new wave, mas tenho minhas dúvidas, eles tocam um pouco de cada coisa: pós-punk, folk, americana, funk, rock, pop e até new wave. O David Byrne gosta de fazer experimentação sonora e a banda tinha um quê intelectual.
A banda tem alguns hits: Burning Down the House, And She Was, Road to Nowhere, Wild Wild Life, Psycho Killer.
A banda separou oficialmente em 1991, o David Byrne já vinha com uma carreira solo desde a metade da década de 1980. Cris e Tina também tinham outra banda, o Tom Tom Club (que tem Genius of Love, com uma batida muito conhecida). Todos continuam ativos, como músicos e produtores. David Byrne até escreveu um livro, Diários de Bicicleta.
Psycho Killer é do primeiro album da banda, Talking Heads 77, mas foi composta antes. No filme é a música que tocam para o Hilly Cristal quando vão ser escolhidos para tocar no CBGB. A linha de baixo dessa música é muito boa, a Tina Weymouth aprendeu rapidinho.
Como o título diz, é uma música sobre um psicopata, serial killer, e seus pensamentos. Como os integrantes da banda moravam na Bowery na época, acho que a inspiração veio da vizinhança.
