In early 2015, Italian electronic producer Fabrizio Mammarella aka Telespazio released an excellent debut full length on Hell Yeah, and now the label offers up four tracks from it remixed by modern greats Kito Jempere, Wolf Muller, Harvey Sutherland and Tempelhof.

In original form the album was a truly unique and idiosyncratic journey into a freaky sound world. Now it has new moods and groves layer into it and becomes just as exciting a proposition as a result.

Up first, Russian Kito Jempere, who has previously released on labels like Freerange, serves up a mid tempo, cosmic work out of ‘Glide Shot’ with smeared synths and loosely jumbled percussion. It’s a perfect early evening track before notoriously weird and eccentric producer jan Schulte aka Wolf Muller, who has released great disco oddities on Themes For Great Cities, then goes slow with his take on ‘Barrier’. Slowly percolating percussion, whistling synths, sci-fi melodies and more all make this a proper freaky curveball.

Echovolt man and melodic deep house craftsmen Harvey Sutherland then layers up globular arps with skyward pads and thin, sheet metal hits to craft something that is propulsive yet beautiful. It’s a patient, spacious remix full of summer soul that really makes you feel good.

Lastly, Tempelhof, who have themselves released excellent ambient works on this label before now, turn ‘Nuvolari’ into a a blissful bit of cosmic and atmospheric chug disco. It will have your head reeling back and your eyes scanning the night sky at the same time as making you dance, and closes out another fantastic package from Hell Yeah.

Last summer the Düsseldorf duo BAR – consisting of the Stabil Elite musician Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang – charmed aficionados of timeless modern pop music with their debut album "Welcome To BAR". With casual verve, they propagate a musical style somewhere between New Wave, Balearic, Shoegaze, Dream Pop and Noir Songwriting, the two of them singing their way into a league of their own. Following many concerts in clubs, at festivals, in art contexts or gracing the fashion scene, the duo have now invited musician friends from Düsseldorf and Los Angeles to remix their songs, which originally featured instruments such as the recorder, synthesizers, drums, soundtrack samples, vocal collages and even a pocket piano. This has resulted in four new arrangements, each of which combine the BAR aesthetic with the artistic hallmarks of the remixers. The record thereby combines influences from the music scenes and cities of LA and Dusseldorf, both of which were equally essential in the development of "Welcome To BAR".

BAR's Düsseldorf colleague Jan Schulte aka Wolf Müller, known for his trippy and percussive sound, has reinterpreted the "BAR Theme". Like on his highly acclaimed releases on the label "Themes For Great Cities", he uses especially rhythmic and driving accents. And like his previous remixes for artists such as Toulouse Low Trax, Mariam The Believer or Balearic godfather José Padilla, he gives enough space to the original while refining it with African melodic traditions and tribal grooves that never exceed a limit of 110 bpm.

The Los Angeles band Pharaohs, whose most prominent member Suzanne Kraft recently gained attention with a marvellous Ambient record, surprises us with a quiet version of "Anjali Reverse". It impresses with cool Balearic style, in midst of which a saxophone and guitars glisten in the sun. A key figure in Pharaohs for BAR is Alejandro Cohen, who they met in 2013 during a trip to LA at the Dublab studio, where Croon played a radio concert. There they also came to know and admire Diva Dompé, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins. The singer, producer and performer has transformed the BAR song "Adios" into a gently culminating Slow-Mo-House sensation that moves the soul with restrained percussion, enchanted singing and gradual Ambient buildup.

The fourth revision stems from BAR's Düsseldorf colleague Orson, who meanwhile turns the bass up loud in Berlin and is internationally celebrated for his releases on his own label "Version". Orson has adorned the piece "Dexy's Alrobe" with rich sine waves, which wind powerfully around the sometimes backwards voice of Lucas Croon and submerges it all in a pillow of bass. 

These four remixes from two cities are full of passion for warm nights in a neon shimmer, where souls are reflected and united in a shared enthusiasm for music.

The Selectors project—an ongoing celebration of DJs with a particular devotion to their craft— successfully launched in 2016 with its first compilation (with Motor City Drum Ensemble at the helm) and a limited-capacity festival in Croatia. Dekmantel has already announced the festival’s return next summer, and now the compilation series is set to continue with a new edition curated by Young Marco.

Born Marco Sterk, he certainly doesn’t come from a standard DJ background. A former skate rat who grew up loving American post-hardcore and ’90s hip-hop as much as early Warp Records, he’s been affiliated over the years with Amsterdam institutions such as Rush Hour, Red Light Records and, of course, Dekmantel itself. Still, there’s no question that he’s always followed his own path, even during the years that playing his favorite records meant that he was occasionally clearing dancefloors.

Things are different these days, of course, as Sterk now regularly plays around the globe and has been widely hailed not just for his DJ talents, but also for his digging prowess and uncanny ability to pluck jams out of genres, eras and geographies that even veteran DJs will often ignore. In his mind, “the joy of getting home and finding out something is awesome is way more exciting than going through a big stack of curated records in some boring boutique record shop.” Still, Marco’s entry in the Selectors series isn’t some soulless collection of “Holy Grail” rarities. “Where’s the fun in that?” he explains. “Anybody with an internet connection can check what flavor-of-the-month records are in demand.”

Just like the first Selectors compilation, this is not a mix CD, but a collection of hand-picked, unmixed tracks that Sterk has personally chosen from his own vinyl archives. Moreover, Marco has put together a collection of tracks that represent not only how he plays music, but also how he makes music himself. The songs here are melodic, electronic and bound together by a refreshing sense of naiveté. Nothing sounds overly calculated; the tunes here span several decades and include dollar-bin records, avant-garde records, club records and yes, a few things that collector types have likely been looking to get their hands on. It's not meant to be a grand statement, as Marco would rather provide an honest snapshot of his musical tastes and share a few of his favorite tracks and artists in the process.
