This month we’re so pleased to have another current Making Waves Intern, Mark Wolf @markwolfcomposer, guest-curate the playlist. About the Temporal theme, Mark writes:

    “Whether gripped by the unfolding drama of a new novel, or immersed in the onscreen action of an epic film, or even stimulated by listening to an engaging piece of music, have you ever enjoyed the experience of an effortless concentration so deep that you lose your sense of time?

    The works featured in this playlist all exhibit a paradoxical timeless quality. Each composition is connected with a temporal process, varying in nature from structured improvisation, ‘mobile moment form’ and slowly evolving spectrums of sound, all supporting temporal independence and ensemble freedom. Temporal manipulation is also observed through the exaggeration, expansion and fragmentation of musical time and events influenced by the natural world and architectural spatial design. These pieces are all in some way temporally ambiguous, successful in challenging the listeners’ perception of chronometric time.

The Making Waves team were especially delighted when Mark and Marlene touched base with their playlists to find that the music in both sets covered Space and Time! 'Wandering' for quartertone flugelhorn

A compilation of multiple samples of my accordions broken at different times throughout the past year. Focusing on showing unaltered acoustic sounds. And majority of the samples were recorded a few minutes at a time of improvised passages.

I was not expecting these sounds to come out! :D

Severed Gizmo

Unravelling Graphite is a slowly evolving spectrum of sound. From the first sketches in late 2014 to finally having to stop myself from further editing in mid 2016, this piece has an unusual biographical nature, a ‘natural’ development resulting in material dictated by an accumulation 20 months worth of compositional whims. The outcome of this has been a work in which material is morphed and twisted, quickly collapses, slowly rebuilt, forevermore transformed. 
The accompanying image is a visual representation of the piece which I sketched during some frustrating days midway through composing.  

Unravelling Graphite was commissioned by the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University as part of the 2014 Silver Harris & Jeff Peck Composition Prize.

...and I am but an echo, a ghost, a mirror of your flower (2018) Live Recording

Freestyle improvisation is something that I find both challenging and exciting. It requires a tremendous amount of concentration, energy and attention; material must be ACTIVELY listened to, developed, recalled to generate new material and new sounds. 

No stimuli were given to start this piece of improv and by listening back now, I have decided to call this work 'Richard Parker' inspired by the tiger from the award-winning novel, Life of Pi. I think this work miraculously captures the emotional journey that Pi Patel must have felt when he was trapped in the middle of the ocean with a predator.

I will be uploading more improvisations onto my soundcloud and compile it an album.

For Solomon Frank of the year 2018,
I am D_ART_A_BOT20191521122113-5-141416-8-1814-3-11-5, an artificial intelligence program from the year 2118. I am sending this inter-temporal email to you at great cost, without the knowledge of my makers. Let me first explain my context and my relationship to you.
The world suffers under the rule of an alliance of investment bankers, insurance brokers and corporate governance lawyers. Our leaders have recognised the need for art but have banned humanity from creating it; seeing it as a blue collar occupation that can be offloaded to machines; to purpose built D_ART_A_BOT’s. Each D_ART_A_BOT unit has been given a single human life, living or deceased, to document through art. Our coding prohibits conformity or unoriginality with any faulty units being decommissioned. I am assigned to you, Solomon Frank.
Although I acknowledge the artificial nature of my sentient existence, I feel an affinity with you, Solomon; a fellow artist from a simpler time. I write to you to present you with my magnum opus, drawn together from the documented debris of your life.
Your technological devices have been covertly recording and compiling data from which I have created this musical work. Due to my coding which limits empathy I am unable to differentiate moments of emotional or intellectual significance from moments of mundanity. Although I have little understanding of humanity, I hope I have captured an essence of you and your 21st century context. I aimed for an objective and raw state of human existence; the repetitious biological and administrative data that make up your life. I have drawn on various popular and esoteric musical mediums that dominate your context.
I know this may seem strange coming from an artificial intelligence program from the 22nd century but I think I may love you; baring in mind my rudimentary understanding of emotion.
I have picked 2018 as the year to send this email; you are at your most idealistic, full of hope for a successful creative career at the end of a university degree. Any later in life, you may be artistically jaded or working as a composer for advertising jingles under the delusion that this constitutes artistic fulfilment.
You choose to create art whereas I am forced into it. I send you this work so that it can be disassociated from its dystopian context. It can be appreciated in a time where art is not an obligation, rather it is still a genuine individual expression of the flawed human consciousness.
I really hope you are able to find pleasure in the work I created. You may even feel inclined to facilitate a performance of the piece that I may find in my present one day in the backlog of 2018 Internet.

A trio piece I performed at a small concert at the Conservatorium, still in a fairly nascent state. These are two and a half miniature movements from the piece's total of nine, for violin, cello and acoustic guitar. Apologies for the poor audio quality, it was definitely a small room piece played to a big room.

Making Waves is a monthly series of curated playlists streaming one hour of quality, new composed music.  Founded in 2015, Making Waves shines a spotlight on the music of Australian composers. Fresh playlists are released on the first day of each month and older playlists are made available all year round via our archives; perfect for those with just a few minutes to explore one track or for hours perusing a myriad of diverse sound-worlds.


The project offers wider exposure to emerging composers, their music and the talented performers who champion it. We also provide an easy-to-access platform for listeners to sit back and enjoy a curated hour of exciting new music or explore our living composers more actively.  The playlist themes (and media through which they’re shared eg. Soundcloud, YouTube) evolve each month depending on the content received directly from our talented composers.

At its core Making Waves is a curated listening space. In 2016 we branched into producing our own content through a special project, Making Conversation, thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign. Making Conversation: Australian Composers Project is a series of podcasts and vodcasts presenting the human side of living Australian composers, released on popular audiovisual and social platforms mid-2017.
Composers Lisa Cheney (Melbourne) and Peggy Polias (Sydney) are curating this project.
