For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow here launches his own new label with the Clamor EP. Across three tracks and one remix from Gold Panda, the release continues to explore the simultaneously frosty yet comforting sonic landscapes that have won him plenty of plaudits (including the likes of Giles Peterson and Thom Yorke) since first emerging in 2010.

As for the new label itself, Snowfall will be something solely curated by Ross; something free from the usual A&R constraints of working for other labels. It will be tied together only by his unique tastes, meaning anything goes from noise to techno to juke to bass to way beyond all of the above. Furthermore, the label will also offer more than just music, be it different release formats, clothes lines and more.

The inaugural EP, Clamor (a Latin word meaning 'loud outcry’ or ‘shout') sees Ross travel yet further outside his usual sphere without straying too far from his trademark textures, drawing on rock-like arrangements whilst at the same time fusing elements of electronica at all available opportunities.

The title track sounds set in some huge open church for the way it echoes and resonates with an untold spirituality. A clatter of tumbling drums bring darkness down below whilst glissando keys and brutish percussion bring a delightfully staccato rhythm up top. ‘Perca’ is alive with busy strings and mutant voices, underlapping claps and plenty of texture adding found sounds: challenging and complex music, it still somehow manages to strike a very human chord.

‘Brook’ meanwhile, glistens like water at the seaside; plucked strings and muffled voices lurk in the shadows and the whole thing sounds like Shlohmo and Fly Lo taking a beach holiday in the Caribbean. Closing out the EP Gold Panda returns a remix favour and strips back ‘Brook’ to a lurching, syncopated and lo-fi hip-house groove that rings out into the night.

Not only another great EP from Throwing Snow, but this release also likely marks the start of something great in Snowfall...

Clamor EP Preview (Snowfall)

Bath's resident prodigy Troy Gunner, having previously cut his teeth with a trilogy of EPs charting leftfield UKG, post-dubstep, and funked-out seemingly-Moog-driven bass jams, joins the Infinite Machine fam with a singular take on dub techno.

The "Masks/The Valley" 12" evokes warm currents of hope hovering above desolate, urban sonic scenery. "Masks" unapologetically makes use of the complete definitive dub techno toolset, being driven by a unrelenting yet gentle 4/4 kick, awash with abyssal dub chords. A left turn is taken when it comes to composition, however... the chord progression is in perfect balance between wistful melancholy and untethered euphoria, with Troy cleverly borrowing from trance in his use of filter cutoff to softly lean more toward one or the other. The vocal cuts depart from usual contemporary trappings of either going helium or deepthroat... instead, they are very human, sparse and elegantly understated.

On the flipside, "The Valley" aims to be an outstanding DJ tool, with a consistent percussive workout, drenched in chilling dub pulses every other bar. A profoundly autumnal, goosebumps-inducing number.

Eyes closed, ears at peak receptiveness for this one. Sweet dreams.

Deep thinking London label The Crescent return for their third release with a sterling EP from the multifarious eleven8. Known for a ruthless control of rhythm, eleven8 applies technique gleaned from years of bass music production to a lower BPM structure, often incorporating live elements to build three emotive and individual tracks.

A side ‘Changing Colours’ is a collab with 17 year old wunderkind Clarity and it’s a breathless meeting of two prodigious minds. A grandiose opening unfolds into a compulsive 130bpm movement, with a dextrous high end sitting pretty over a reese bassline, interspersed with stabs of perfectly tuned chords. This is undoubtedly club fare, but on a different level.  

On the flip, ‘I Fell into a Memory’ is a richly musical affair, with subtle guitar licks poised between a pacy and progressive drum pattern, with eleven8’s mastery of pitch manifested in a rich blend of background ambiences and a perfectly placed sample. An intense half stepper, B2’s ‘Scattered’ again centres around a guitar hook that drifts into a brilliantly balanced ocean of reverb, while a crisp drum pattern moves this one along in a decisive fashion.

With commitment to aesthetic on every level a founding principal of the label, CRES003 comes with sleeve art by Japanese artist Buna, tailored especially for the release.

Having minted his Snowfall imprint with the acclaimed ‘Clamor’ EP earlier this year, Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow returns on December 3rd for his second EP of 2012, the eagerly awaited ‘Aspera’. As with its predecessor, the title comes laced with Latin rhetoric: “Aspera” translating as “to make rough”, providing an apt description for the aesthetic of the four original tracks on offer. 

From the title track Tones' creative direction is clearly displayed. Hinging round a warming bass, coarse stripped back drums accompany frosty arpeggios and washed out synths atop a bed of hidden strings, whilst on ‘Melum’ flickering percussion, ethereal guitars and throbbing melodic jabs combine with Throwing Snow’s trademark distortion, culminating in an unexpected segment of footwork punctuating the track’s expansive growth.

‘Lingerwell’ sees four knackered piano chords wrapped in warm crackles and hypnotic atmospherics blooming into life with a burst of pulsating stabs, before ‘Behest’ closes the EP with a climactic slugging match of drowned drums, throbbing bass and ecclesiastical synths, and a drop to make even the most atheistic of us think again.

Snowfall is now two releases strong, and having set out with an honest mission statement we are left highly anticipating what will surface next.

I am a young producer from Derby (Derbyshire, United Kingdom) who is mainly based in Huddersfield (Yorkshire, United Kingdom). 
I mainly produce Liquid Dubstep but regularly try out Drum & Bass as well as a few other genres.
I use Logic Pro 9 and have a reasonable small set up that include an audio interface, monitors, microphones and many percussion instruments.
