  This song started with Artur composing a brilliant, open piece on his guitar, in his distinct surf rock style, and sending it to Josh. Josh put the bass down on top of Ken's banging drums, but it took Josh, a while to be able to get this one for some reason. Once he and Ken were locked in, though, they knew they had it. JJ then sprinkled his electric keyboard magic, followed by Tez, who lights up the whole thing with his electric guitar wizardry. 
  At Artur's request, Ken, JJ, and Josh added the big harmony vocals, "See you soon, in a better world." Artur wanted this song to be about the need for peace in the world. Last, but certainly not least, Stephen added the sitar intro. He also accomplished the herculean task of mixing and producing the whole thing for us.
  This is another true team effort by the Eclectic Collective, and the fourth in our series of surf rock songs. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

  This is a song that JJ created late one Saturday night on the piano, drums, bass, and guitar. You can hear his Grateful Dead influence if you're familiar with the band. He then presented it to the rest of the Eclectic Collective so we could do our thing with it. Josh replaced JJ's rough bass with his interpretation of the line as soon as Ken replaced the drums with his interpretation of the beat. Interestingly, Ravel's Bolero had a lot to do with the inspiration for the second part of the song. After the rhythm section was done, we turned it over to Stephen, who came up with some really subtle, yet very necessary guitar lines. 
  We then turned it over to our relatively new collaborator, Mark, who came up with the lyrics and vocals. He was also instrumental in getting the arrangement to fit right with the vocals. This is a lyrical and vocal songwriting debut for Mark, who was inspired by his very first listen to JJ's rough draft. Thus, this song is extra special for him.  
 We all hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we did creating it.
  Mark's lyrics are about our Earthly relatives in the far distant future. At that point life on earth would have just about reached its limits, and so mankind embarks on a journey through space to find another place to call home.

  This song began its life as a composition that JJ wrote one evening on the piano and synth. He also wrote the lyrics and sings this one. He was very excited to share it with us, so he invited Josh, Ken, Stephen and Tez into the project immediately after finishing. However, we couldn't make the thing work at first, so JJ went back and retooled it, streamlined it, and gave it back to us. We all really liked the Floydiness of the groove, and his signature psychedelic coda ending. 
  After Ken had laid down his inspired, foundational  drums, Josh laid down his bass part with his big monster five-string bass, which is good for really low tones. Then it was Tez's turn. He came up with something very Gilmore-esque, with his always exciting leads throughout the first section. Stephen then added some brilliant, filling acoustic guitar to the first section. He, along with Tez, also added some trippy electric guitar to the coda. Finally, Josh just thought it needed something to push the coda over the edge, so he added the slide at the end, too.
  Then, of course, we asked Stephen to produce and mix it for us, which he did in his always expert way. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it. Also, we wish a very happy holidays to everyone!

This is a song started when Mark came up with its architecture, recorded in a  slower, more laid back version on his own. However, he wanted a more souped up version with solos in turns. 

So, he turned to The Eclectic Collective to fill in the pieces. He originally had solos in all the parts which he laid down on the keys, and he had some lyrics, too. However, once he heard The Mysterious Decibel's excellent lyrics and vocals, the song totally changed the direction and the vibe, for the stellar. 

But MD didn't start the whole thing. As happens sometimes, even without Tez on this one, we still needed to clear out some space to let everyone have their say. So, Mark went in and lengthened the song mechanically. Once we had a final form, Ken, as always, came up with the foundation for the song, allowing Josh to add his version of Mark's bass line. 

Then, after MD gave us the vocals to form the song, we got down to adding the solos. JJ first added his thrilling opening piano solo, as well as the electric piano solo right after the first verse, which Mark is also playing a VST sax solo in, as well. Then Josh added his guitar solo, which is the first of the two, with a very clean tone. Right after that, Stephen added his fiery solo, which follows right after with a more overdriven tone. Finally, Mark stepped back in and added his killer harp solo at the end. Of course, it needed to be mixed well, too, so we turned to Stephen for that important role, once again, which he fulfilled expertly.  
 

This past Tuesday, we released a fun little series of interviews over a compilation of some of our favorite musical moments. If you want to hear our voices and some of our thoughts about music, check it out. I realize it's a big ask at twenty minutes, but you might really enjoy it, especially if you follow us, and have been for a while. It's a celebration of all of our work over the past almost year together in various forms. This song was supposed to be a showcase of all of our skills, except Tez isn't in on this one. He'll be on the next one, though, for sure.
  We hope you enjoy this jazzier side of the EC as much as we enjoyed making it. MD's lyrics are about a psycho killer artist who hides clues about his murders in his paintings.

This song began with Artur composing the entire skeleton, and recording it against a mechanical beat. He presented it to Josh, who immediately shared it with The Eclectic Collective. Ken first replaced the metronomic beat with a real, rocking drum sound. Josh promptly added his fretless bass to it, to complete the rhythm section. Soon after, JJ added his electric piano magic, including a short solo, to the stew. Once the rhythmic framework was laid down, Stephen got to work on the choruses, coming up with solid, melodic lines for them. Then, it was Tez's turn to light up the verses with his monster guitar. When we had it mostly completed, Artur asked JJ if he'd do an intro to it. JJ came up with the whole psychedelic intro in response. 
  When it was finished, we asked Stephen if he would mix it for us, which he did with his typical mastery and attention to detail. We all really enjoy making music with Artur, and have been fans of and collaborators with him for almost a year now. If you like the sound of this song, you would do well to go check out his page, too, as he has a bunch of gems on there. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Tell Me The Truth  - The Eclectic Collective

This song began with John, who is a verifiable expert in all things Jimmy Page, asking me and the Eclectic Collective if we'd like to cover another Led Zeppelin song to follow Hey Hey What Can I Do? Of course, the Eclectic collective is always down to sink their teeth into some of the best rock and roll ever made. John found us recordings of the original Zep version that were separated into their individual tracks, so as we were adding, we could hear what our part would've sounded like playing with the original band. What a thrill!
  Ken was first to complete his part, and did a great job of capturing the frenetic energy of Bonzo. John was up soon after, amazing us with a note for note interpretation of Page on both the guitar and mandolin. I came next, after nearly deciding that JPS's part was too difficult. It wasn't. Then, when the bulk of the music was recorded, MD came through and stunned us with a brilliant interpretation of Plant's vocals. To bring it to a boil, Stephen then laid down his magical banjo in there, too. Lasty, Ken and I polished it off with some background vocals at the end. 
  Of course, every great song needs a great producer, who in this case was Stephen. He managed to even it out and get it to sound not only like the album, but very dynamic, as well. 
  This is the EC's second collaboration with John, and we're all stricken by how proficient he is at playing Page's material. I had a dream I was at the breakfast spot in the bowling alley of my hometown, and I met this giantess of a woman, at least seven feet, and we sat and drank coffee and smoked, I got up to use the bathroom, and when I got back she was gone. I haven’t seen her since. This is what the song sounded like that was playing on the radio behind the counter in my dream diner.

This song began as a well developed, funky disco idea Roy came up with on his guitar, and shared with JJ. JJ added a wonderfully complex orchestration of various keys, including brass, strings, and the sax solo you hear towards the end. 
  JJ invited Stephen Stephen first, who came up with the funky ass wah guitar that also carries the groove. Of course, JJ realized that this is a disco song, so he enlisted Ken to come up with one of his awesome beats to carry it along. JJ had a rudimentary bass line that he played himself, but decided to get me to do the honors instead. So, I came up with a totally new bass line designed to shake your cheeks.
Once it was in the can, we decided to ask have JJ mix it for us. This is a first time JJ has mixed a song for The Eclectic Collective, and we were all impressed with his work. Stephen mastered it, as he is a master masterer. 
  We're all really impressed and delighted with the experience of working with Roy and his music. He is a very talented artist with a lot of great music to check out on his page, too.

This is a song that Frans wrote, recorded, and gave to Josh to share with the Eclectic Collective. Frans is playing all the foundational instruments of the incredibly intricate yet perfectly foundational rhythm section, including Fender electric bass, Roland synthesizer bass, Gibson SG electric guitar rhythm, Godin electric guitar slide background, trumpet background, horn section, including alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, Hohner Blues Bender harmonica solo, Gibson 335 electric guitar background rhythm, a full set drum kit, percussion, cowbell, and tambourine. As mentioned in the previous sentence, he also plays the amazing harp solo after the second verse. All of Frans's music is a dazzling display of solo work on top of a dense, rock solid rhythm section. So, in that spirit, this song is a display of all of us taking 12 bars to show what we can do.
  Tez was first to add his expert blues guitar in the section right after the opening vocals. Josh took the next slot, with the notey second guitar solo on the first chorus section. Stephen added his fiery guitar next, in the last slot, after Frans's harp solo. JJ was next in line, though, bringing his piano and organ to the mix, both in a support role throughout, and in the piano solo between Josh's solo and the second verse. Ken, then came up with some lyrics and sung the whole thing for us, very ably and in the propper spirit of the song (which was named randomly by Frans). 
  Of course, every great song needs a great producer, and we tapped Stephen to do the honors here, as he's our resident expert producer. 
  We are all honored and very grateful to Frans, whom we all respect and admire to a very high degree, for sharing this with us. He's as talented a multi-instrumentalist as you'll ever come across, with hours of astounding music on his page.

 This is a song that Chris wrote on the drums, bass, and guitar and shared with the collective. We all love working on Chris's songs, and got to work on it even more enthusiastically than usual. Josh was up first with his lap steel, which he weaves throughout. He also added the sitar at the beginning and the acoustic sitar at the end. Stephen stepped in and added the gnarly electric sitar at the end. JJ also made his presence heard by adding the thrilling organ and electric piano throughout. Ken then augmented Chris's original drums with his own in expert fashion. Last, but not least, Tez added his electric guitat magic to the stew, as well. 

  Since Chris brought this song to the group, and is a fine producer, he did the honors of the mix and production.

We love working on his songs, and all jumped at the chance to play with this one, as well. He wrote it on an acoustic guitar, onto which he also put some heavy reverb, giving it an ethereal, chordal sound. To that bare bones, Josh fist added his four-string fretless bass to a click track, of all things. Luckily, Ken swooped in soon after and gave it a proper beat with his lively percussion performance. 
  Once the rhythm section was complete, Tez added his melodic, golden-tone guiar in there. Then, it was JJ's turn. He added not only the piano and synth, but wrote the lyrics and sang it, as well.

Here’s my attempt at Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. She inspired me to create my own music in my own house years ago. With piano and lots of vocal layers. 😊🎤🌷💕

This song began with David, who wrote it on the guitar, synth, and bass over a programmed beat he created. He and Josh met more than two months ago and decided to do a collaboration, based on mutual enjoyment of and respect for each other's music. Dave had this song pretty much fleshed out, although it was still a skeleton when he offered it to Josh, who, of course, got the rest of the Eclectic Collective involved. 

Dave asked us all to compose our own parts for the song, so we all got to work right away doing that. We all realized that the first order of business would be to get a real beat on this, so Ken accomplished that task with some dynamic, Eastern inspired drums and percussion, which he plays throughout the song. JJ then stepped in and added his best eastern flute magic. Stephen was next with the perfect-vibe sitar you hear in the first two sections. 

Josh came next to add his five-string fretless bass to the mix, augmenting David's high, staccato bass with his deep, low tone bass. Then, for the third section, where David's Gilmore-esque guitar solo resides, Josh drops out, allowing for Dave's awesome bass playing in that section. However, Josh does come in again towards the end, in the final section, too. Also, in that section, Tez dropped an augmented, harmonic, electric fire, complementary guitar part. Then, David's frequent collaborator and friend Ron added some well blended, ethereal synth to the first section, too.

Once we had the instrumental parts pretty much laid down, we began to discuss getting a woman to sing on this, as David was inspired by The Great Gig in the Sky, by Pink Floyd, and we all agreed. Who we found to do it actually blew all of our minds. JJ, being familiar with her music, contacted Elpi first, and we were all lucky enough that she agreed to do it. Having heard Mediterranean music all her life in Greece, she tapped into what her husband said were her "ancient Greek roots" for her spectacular vocal performance. She finds all the modal notes and places them perfectly throughout her sections. 

But before we were done, Mark came through with some really striking talking drum parts in the first two sections, too. Once we had everything in the can, David took over, both with some masterful editing and production, and with the balanced, dynamic mix. The mix was a formidable task, but he did it with considerable skill, also taking everyone's opinions into account, which is a talent in and of itself. When he was done with the mix, he turned it over to Stephen for the mastering, which the latter did to everyone's satisfaction, as always.

This is the first song the Eclectic Collective has done with David, Elpi, and Ron, and we all hope it's the first of many, as we welcome them into the EC family. They all have some wonderful music on their pages, too, so do yourself a favor and check out all of them, as well. We hope you enjoy listening to this song as much as we enjoyed creating it.

The Eclectic Collective -- composition

This song began its life when Ken came to with a series of drum skeletons about half a year ago with the intent of starting several McDonald's themed songs that The Mysterious Decibel was writing for the group. Well MD had some life getting in the way and then decided to pursue another project full time, leaving us with four solid songs, but without vocals. Ken ended up supplying the solid lead vocals and harmonies you hear the whole way through, with original lyrics that he also wrote.

  But before any of that happened, we got this song together. Stephen was first up, coming up with the main guitar riffs that carry the whole way through. Josh responded quickly to the his guitar parts with some matching bass to go along with it. 

  About this time, Mark heard the funky break in there, and so installed every part of it all on his own, including the clavinet, organ, bass, and drums. Although, Ken is also still playing in the break, as well. When we had it pretty well set, Tez came along and added some fiery guitar to go along with Stephen's. 

 Once we had it in the can, we turned it over to Mark for his expert mix. Stephen mastered it for us, too, for the final touch.

  This ended up being a satisfying product of The Eclectic Collective's teamwork. We hope you enjoyed listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

This song began with JJ on a late Saturday night, coming up with it on the drums, bass, and organ. He even added some real triange, if you listen for it, you'll be delighted. He had a killer jazz groove on his mind when he composed it, and was able to really bring it to life on all levels. He originally wrote it as a solo piece, but asked Josh if he would like to add a guitar part. Josh jumped at the opportunity to play an original jazz song on his guitar, and in a few days, recorded more than 20 takes of it. He finally landed on the one you hear in here now. 

  They asked Stephen to mix, master, and produce it for them, which he did in his typically professional way.

  This was a fun, exciting collaboration, featuring just JJ and Josh, but the rest of the Eclectic Collective will be back with them next time. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

This song began its life some 20 years ago recorded on Mark's old skool keyboard workstation as a bass line and drum beat, accentuated by a synth melody playing over some electric piano. It sat as that basic version until just recently, when Mark had gotten into horn arrangements, and wanted to try some out, thus creating the impetus for reviving this old tune. Plus, he wanted to get the Eclectic Collective to play the guitar and keys parts on it for a little extra jazzy pizzazz.
  He turned it over to the rest of the EC gang with a pretty clear vision of what he wanted structurally. Stephen was first up, adding his driving guitar to the fist part of every verse. Josh deftly chimed in with the response line in every verse. JJ then came into the mix last and sprinkled his magic electric piano and other keys throughout. After all of our parts were in the can, Mark went to work dutifully editing and mixing what you hear as the final product. Stephen then did his pro mastering work on it to add a little bit more shine.
 This was a lot of fun to put together. It doesn't feature all of the EC, but the other guys will be on many upcoming creations. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Welcome to my page, my peers, associates, friends, and musical family. I'm a lifelong, multi-instrumentalist musician who records prolifically and joyfully. You'll hear me play guitar, bass (regular four string, and four and five string fretless), mandolin, banjo, keys (piano, organ, synth), lap slide, sitar, and sing on my recordings here. I've been in a few dozen bands in my life, playing everything from bluegrass, jazz, rock, jam band, reggae, funk, afrobeat, Middle Eastern, traditional Irish, singer/songwriter, pop/covers, to experimental/avant garde. 
  Since I found SoundCloud a couple years ago, I've found many talented, creative people with whom to create music. However, in the summer of '23 I formed a band called The Eclectic Collective with some of my favorite musicians I've met through here. It started as a loose collective of musicians and coalesced into a core group of musicians who find other musicians with whom we'd like to make music, then run their songs through our process, and in effect add a full band. That core of The Eclectic Collective includes Tez (Llanpsych), J.J. Terrel, Ken (K2 and the Three), Stephen (Texmex Shaman), Chris (cgmaness), and Mark (mistermark). A couple of other musicians are frequent collaborators, as well, including Artur of Surfers Like Us, and Steve Vervaet of Steve's World. More recently, we've been joined by Carl of The Beautiful Dark fame. 
  The magic of music is amplified exponentially by each person adding to it. So, we really try to add our sorcery all kinds of music from all kinds of artists. Sometimes, we keep it within the group, but a lot of what we do is collaboration with other artists. Therefore these days, 100% of what I do is collaboration, within the group or with other artists on the side.
  I, and we, are also available for hire if you have a song or lyrics and you really want to add bigger instrumentation or a band and good production to it.

I also really like and am influenced by traditional Iranian, Palestinian, Indian, Sri Lankan, Sudanese, Mauritian, Somalian, Egyptian, West African, and Syrian music. I welcome anyone who plays non-western music to contact me for a collaboration, too.
 I'm overjoyed to have found my community on SoundCloud. This is a truly unique forum where everyone is sincerely trying to build each other up. The profoundly supportive and positive SoundCloud community has really opened up an exciting new world of collaboration for me. That is the main reason I'm in the Cloud, actually, to connect with other musicians and make music that I enjoy listening to, and hopefully others do, as well. I am ALWAYS looking to collaborate with interesting musicians, mostly though BandLab, which is where I record almost exclusively. It's a solid, free digital audio workstation hub where you can share recording projects, even if it's not where you make your recordings.
  Everything I do is live instrumental, not programmed, and using no computer beyond my phone. That's not to say that I would be opposed to using that kind of tool, it's just not my preferred medium with which to paint. If you like my music, please share it.
