Early Evening Etikett W: Joshua Mellard 02.11.22

"You don't sound like anyone else," said Danny Thompson - renowned bass player for Nick Drake and Joe Strummer - about English musician Conil.

The GRAMMY-winning engineer for Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, Tchad Blake said: "Strange Part of the Country is an awesome album! I still listen to it."

Fleetwood Mac legend Peter Green liked Conil's music so much he stopped by Conil’s house to record with him. They recorded a version of Conil's homage to the jazz greats "Round Midnight". 

Strange Part of the Country never conformed to any current trends and has remained timeless. Now, people are discovering this album and it is becoming an all-time favourite. 

When the album was released in the UK, it received some amazing press. Britain's biggest selling music monthly Q magazine gave it: "Four stars - Q Recommends". Blues Matters magazine wrote: "One of the most original artists out there". In the next issue, Blues Matters put him on the front cover.

Conil left London after Strange Part of the Country was released and has spent the last ten years living in the United States and Europe - including New Orleans, New York City, and Berlin.

Joshua Mellard, a.k.a. Josh Em, is a musician, composer and producer from West Yorkshire (UK).

Having moved to Berlin in 2022 to study a masters in Creative Electronic Music Production, Josh Em has been honing his craft as a composer and performer of experimental electronic music. His use of analogue synthesis, manipulation of field recordings and inventive studio techniques combine to enable the focus on abstract storytelling in both his recorded music and live performances, generating output for focussed listening and for the dancefloor.

As a solo live performer, Josh Em has played across Berlin at venues such as Kwia, Acud Macht Neu and Loophole, and in 2023 produced an A/V set for Transmediale festival alongside visual artist Connor Oman. When in the UK, he performed support slots for high-profile artists such as Suzanne Ciani and Hermeto Pascoal. His DJ sets focus on variation, using a colourful palette of disparate styles and energies to create danceable narratives that move from the joyful to the surreal, the heady, the fragile, and all point in between. Josh Em is also a Etikett Radio host, streaming live twice a month from the Funkhaus, Berlin.
