Audio from NBC's "Monitor" program, days after Hurricane Carla hit the gulf coast of Texas in 1961.  KOLE reporter Joe Holstead (my Dad) would eventually rise though the ranks of radio stations in a number of Texas cities, to eventually be the long-time substitute for ABC's Paul Harvey.  In this clip not only will you hear my Father, but Gene Rayburn, Gordon Frazier and the announcement of the birth of my older brother Joey, who arrived in a Pt. Arthur hospital during the height of the storm.

As a teenager, I spent many an all-night minding the store at KLIF/1190 in Dallas.  Really was not much to do.  I read the news headlines at the top of the hour and did the weather-pulled up "TalkNet" on the satellite and I had about 53 minutes of time left to myself.  In the control room, I was able to monitor WNBC Radio in New York on an unused satellite frequency.  I loved their "All-Night Time Machine" for it captured the magic of 60's and 70's radio so perfectly.  One night I called the request line, and actually made it on the air.  My friend Mike Wade recently discovered this audio treasure-and what a treat it was for me.  (Even if KLIF PD <and now GM> Dan Bennett felt I could be doing something more useful with my time.)
