Omar asks: What is the best approach for learning technical or very complex subjects, such as programming, network security, or day trading? the advice here, and if you're curious about programming specifically, there's a chapter on Programming in Ruby in the first 20 hours. So that's a very specific case study. 

The best advice I can give you for very technical or complex subjects is you absolutely have to break it down into small parts. Otherwise you're going to get completely overwhelmed, particularly if it's a new area. So if you've never done something in the area of network security and you open up a random book on the subject, the entire thing is going to be gibberish and it's going to be super frustrating because you're not going to have anything that your mind can latch hold of as something that you can understand and start to break it down. 

So, the best advice I can give you is, instead of focusing on learning the global skill of network security decide that or figure out some very specific application. Why do you want to learn network security or programming or day trading in the first place? What What do you want to be able to do when you're done? 

The more specific you can make that. I call this the target performance level the more specific you can make that target performance level, the easier it will be to figure out how to practice that specific thing. So, for example, network security. If you interested in learning this for work, figure out a specific network or a specific program that you want to practice penetration testing, for example. 

Or look for specific vulnerabilities like cross-site scripting. Pick something very specific to focus on first, and then when you practice that, you will learn a lot in the process of that, and that will actually help you into other areas and use the same things that you learned in the first process of learning in the subsequent steps. 

So, break it down. Make it very, very specific what you want to be able to do and practice that specific thing first. Hope that helps!
