John says, "I can see how the approach may work better for something like learning to play a musical instrument or learn another language, but would you apply it to something less concrete like critical thinking skills, communication skills, or in my case commodity research skills?" The answer to this question is that each of those things that you mentioned, 

critical thinking skills, communication skills or commodity research skills are way to broad of a topic to be useful. So the first step in all of these cases is to identify when you say "commodity research skills," what does that really mean? what are you trying to do? When you find the level of skill or you build the level of skill that you're looking for, what is it precisely that you're going to be able to do? 

What's the outcome? The more clearly you can define the outcome, what it actually looks like to perform this thing that you want to do in the real world, it's way easier to break it down, deconstruct the necessary sub-skills, and start practicing in a smart way. Same thing goes for critical thinking. 

Same thing goes for communication. Decide exactly what you want to be able to do and then focus your practice on the things that will help you get there most directly. Hope this helps.
