Steve Lawler makes his debut on Hector Couto’s thriving Roush imprint to kick off 2017, with both Couto and Spanish talent Cuartero providing two stellar remixes.
2016 has seen Hector Couto’s Roush take a firm hold within the world of house, with releases from industry heavyweights including the likes of DJ W!ld, Steve Rachmad, Santé, Neverdogs, DJ T. and more this year alone. Next up is VIVa boss Steve Lawler, who finally releases ‘People Having Sex’ as his first offering on the label.
“I’m very happy to now release this track. I made it a couple of years ago around the time I made ‘House Record’ that was eventually released on Hot Creations. I was experimenting with my old Roland machines, trying to re-create a sound that I was aware of in the late 80’s. This track ‘People Having Sex’ was never sent out to anyone at the time and just kept it for my DJ sets. Now 2 years on, and under the desire of many people asking what this track is throughout all of this summer, I have decided to release it and where better than Hector Couto’s House label Roush” - Steve Lawler
Lawler’s original opens up the EP in fine style, revealing ever-evolving 303 lines, mischievous vocals, 808 claps and precise percussion patterns that combine to combine unearth a record unquestionably intended for the dancefloor. Next up, Roush boss Hector Couto’s interpretation firmly places its emphasis on percussion, with a driving low-slung groove and rugged drum licks guiding the production into an energy-fuelled workout across five and a half minutes.
Lastly, Cuartero’s remix shapes up the package by utilising the original’s playful vocal over a bubbling lead line whilst a series of glitches and pops ebb and flow amongst shuffling hats in the background, rounding out yet another impressive package from the team at Roush. Steve Lawler ‘People Having Sex’ is out on Roush on January 30th 2017.

2016 has been yet another great year for UK artist Jey Kurmis with releases and remixes on the likes of Hot Creations, Moon Harbour, Leftroom and Viva and now closes out the year with a release for Kaluki Musik. Amongst a steady stream of releases via some of contemporary house music’s most revered imprints, this year also saw Kurmis play DC10 for Paradise and shows during Sonar Barcelona, Amsterdam Dance Event and many more showcasing Jey’s current prominence.
Across the ‘Banx’ EP Jey Kurmis delivers his typically frenzied house style and the title-cut takes the lead with an amalgamation of processed vocal lines, a snaking bass groove, sporadic snare rolls and tension building pad sequences. ‘Margot’ follows and employs stripped-back percussion alongside short bass licks, choppy vocal layers and resonant synth whirrs to create a heady hypnotic workout.
The third and final original from Kurmis comes next, entitled ‘Peachey’ and retaining a similarly robust, sparse rhythmic drive while soft synth stabs and vocal murmurs ebb and flow throughout the groove. Recent beatport chart toppers and residents of the Kaluki events Solardo then close out the package, turning in a more direct dance-floor focused interpretation, extracting snippets from the original number and layering them alongside their own raw rhythmic style.

Cooked up with a more melodic vibe and fusing elements of house and techno, Dense & Pika’s latest outing on Drumcode offers something different compared to their previous work. There is still that vintage feel to each of the tracks with analogue sounds and arrangements born and developed from experimental studio jams. Indeed, ‘Suki’ heavily utilizes the distinct harmonic tones of the Dave Smith Prophet 8 keyboard. While ‘Little Sun’ - A staple of D&P performances over the last three months - delivers a more classic Drumcode sound. ‘Lanky’ closes out the release with an infectious slab of wonderfully wonked-out raw funk.

UK techno legend Mark Broom returns to Rekids in February to release four uplifting cuts in the form of his ‘Break 97’ EP.

Mark Broom’s musical career is certainly something to behold – with over 150 releases over the past 25 years, on top of regular gigs across the world’s most renowned institutions, there’s no doubting his work ethic and his influence upon the scene. A prolific artist and true pioneer in the techno world, having worked with revered labels such as Warp, R&S, Ifach and Soma, and in more recent times Blueprint, EPM Music, Red Sonja Records and his own Beard Man Records, his ‘Break 97’ EP kick-starts 2019 for Radio Slave’s Rekids as the imprint adds yet another outstanding name to its roster following the likes of DJ Deep, Sebo K, DJ Spider and more.

‘Break 97’ sets the tone of the EP with a fusion of techno and disco, delicately blending funk-infused chords and resonating kicks amongst groove-filled vocals, before ‘Heart’ delivers inspiriting disco samples, punchy low end and elevating strings to reveal an effervescent aesthetic throughout. ‘EFB’ takes things up a notch, offering a dancefloor focused cut balancing rattling highs, vibrant synth flutters and a muffled vocal line, until ‘G Theme’ rounds out proceedings armed with robust percussion, electrifying vocals and undulating, euphoric keys.

Truesoul continues 2019 in stunning form, with a fantastic original from Riva Starr and a trio of classy remixes from the Italian master’s ‘Curveballs’ album. 

Almost 15 years deep into his career and the Napoli-born, London dwelling Riva Starr (aka Stefano Miele) remains one of electronic music’s most eclectic selectors, his production repertoire encompassing house, techno, breakbeat and beyond. Making his debut on Truesoul in 2017, his contributions include a memorable collaborative EP with Tiger Stripes titled ‘Sound of the Bettest’ and his fourth album ‘Curveballs’ released in October 2018.

Such is the high regard Adam Beyer holds Riva Starr, that it wasn’t long before a return to Truesoul was on the cards. ‘Jill Wears Black’ leads the package, a masterclass in fleetfooted dynamics as multi-layered strings, undulating bass and punchy percussion rub shoulders throughout the six-minute cut. An inspired composition that’s already highlighted Resistance in Ibiza, Elrow and a host of festivals throughout the summer months.

On the remix front, Truesoul has recruited three of the finest to remix Riva’s ‘Curveball’ originals. Drumcode mainstay Layton Giordani steps up for his first Truesoul outing since 2016, reworking ‘The Hole’ into a throbbing peak-time weapon. Marquis Hawkes, one of the Italian’s favourite producer of late, also joins the project, delivering a glistening, spacey interpretation of ‘Piknik’. Firebrand Harvey McKay delivers a trademark powerful re-rub of ‘Disco Loco’, taking the synths of the original and jacking up the intensity to bring it into peak-time techno territory.

Intec regular Fabio Neural is back on the label with an EP he has made in collaboration with Konrad (Italy) and Frankyeffe who has each collaborated on a separate track. Fabio has featured on eight other Intec releases and is one of the label's most consistent artists, but his music has also been a feature of many other highly respected labels including OFF Recordings, KD Music, Ovum Recordings and Truesoul. 

All of the producers on this release have roots in Italy, and Fabio Neural is the glue that binds this EP, but each of the collaborating artists is also a solo artist in their own right. Konrad (Italy) has previously worked with Fabio Neural when they joined forces for an EP on Misfit Music, but he has also put out solo releases on labels such as Octopus, Phobiq and Unrilis. Frankyeffe along with many solo tracks on many high profile labels, is also a regular collaborator with many other artists such as Loco & Jam, Mauro Picotto, Hollen and Enrico Sangiuliano. This is the first time he has worked on music with Fabio, but with a combined output this impressive we hope to hear more from the pair. 

First on the EP is Black Jack made by Fabio Neural & Konrad (Italy) and its got a distinct sound with an unusual blend of textures. Burbling melodies, spinning FX and rubbery synths combined with vocal stabs and hard hitting percussion give this release an atmospheric sound that still delivers everything you need to rock a dance floor. 

Track two by Fabio Neural & Frankyeffe titled "B&S" is deeper than the first with dusty vocals and old school flavour. Slow building, the track unfolds with a held sense of suspense and a captivating mystique. Whether its the perfect building track in a techno set or perhaps even something to lift a house set to the next level, either way, this is a classy cut of the finest deep techno.
